My 6 year old Sebastopol Sammie is going lame on me. His one foot has warts growing on it. I check it for bumble foot and it was not that. He had developed warts all on the bottom of the foot. Now the other leg is going lame he is getting where he can hardly get around.
Does anyone know if there is anything I can do for my very first Sebastopol gander? I have thought about wrapping his leg with the tape you use on horses legs. That maybe that might help him. He is so determined to get around still and is very healthy.
I want to do something for him. I have never had leg issues before in my sebbies. Anyone have any ideas if so throw them at me.

What causes the warts RURU? there is meds you can buy to remove warts on people but don't know if it's safe for water fowl. Soaking in warm Epsom salt water comes to mind.

Miss Lydia I have no idea of what causes the warts. They are on the bottom of the foot. It is the other leg I am concerned about.
He can not stand up on the leg it keeps going down and poor Sammie is walking on the whole bottom part of the leg. When the ganders were fighting with each other I guess something happened to his leg. He is now lame in that leg. I have never had to deal with anything like this before.

I'm sorry RURU, can you put him in an area where he doesn't have to do much walking? sometimes just a bit of rest will help with healing. I just finished up treating my gander Sammy for a swollen foot pad, lots of soaking and it is finally healed. Or maybe a small pen with some kind of leg brace, but what they will chew on just about anything.

I rescued 4 adult geese (1 male and 3 females) that were mistreated at a feed store. When I acquired my geese, the one gander was lame and I assumed that it was an injury. I have good a good friend who is the assistant curator for the local zoo who referred me to a local vet that treated the zoo animals. It turns out the vet was specialized in birds and fowl. I took the boy to see Dr. Sue and she did a very thorough exam and came to the conclusion that his lameness was not from an injury. She believed he had developed a tumor in his reproductive organs which was impacting the sciatic nerve which passed through the area. I gave him anti-flamatory medication in an attempt to reduce the tumor/swelling in hopes of relieving the pressure to the sciatic nerve. He did improve some and got around quite well with a limp for a little more than a year.

Thank you Miss Lydia and Barry for your information. I am going to try and wrap my Sammie leg and keep him contained for a few days to rest his leg and see if it helps. This is my first Sebastopol and is so very special to me. Got him and Samantha together. They had my first goslings. He means so much to me. I hate to see him going down. But all the ganders attacked him in breeding season. No telling what they did to him or caused to hurt him. At night I put him up with Ginger who is now his mate, Hanna and Nikki. Nikki and Sammie are always together and never fight like ganders even in breeding season. So he gets rest at night but not enough I guess.

Well RURU hopefully he'll be back up walking around soon, they are very special I know exactly what your saying. If he'll let you soak his legs the Epsom salt water might help if there's inflammation .I used a 3 gallon bucket put warm water in it 2 cups of Epsom salt and mixed then picked Sammy up and put him into the bucket feet first, I usually ended up soaked but I would make him stand there for at least 10 minutes. Epsom salts is used as a laxative so you don't want him to drink it. You probably already know this but some don't so thought I'd say just in case.

Miss Lydia the up date on Sammie is not good. The leg got better but something other than the lame leg is wrong with Sammie. He is starving to death. I have been feeding him and he just is losing the battle with life. So I have decided to have him put to sleep. I picked him up and he is wasting away and I do not want him to suffer another minute!!!!
