Gander with swollen foot

My gander Sammy has a pad the one right in the middle that is pretty swollen, I noticed this morning when I let them out that he had a slight limp. I soaked his foot in some Epsom salt water with a dash of 35% peroxide then got a good look at it, doesn't look like there is anything in it and there is not the dreaded blk scab. but pretty swelled. after soaking I sprayed Veterycin on it and put him and Missy inside a smaller fenced in area. Should I do anything else? This evening before bed I'll soak again and spray again. He was such a good boy.

Sorry to read about Sammy. It does sound like there's either;

A localised infection in the foot pad

OR

A foreign body in the pad.

Either way it sounds like an infection and keeping it clean will be the first priority. Perhaps a very clean pen with wood shaving will help towards this. I would continue to apply antiseptic and cleaning twice daily and this may well be enough. However if the swelling enlarges or becomes more inflamed then I would take him to the Vet for specific treatment.

No problem. I often find that pine shavings as a bedding really keeps an infected area clean while it heals.

I just finished cleaning out their stall put down vinyl on the floor and put in fresh shavings so they are good to go. And I hope you don't mind but I have made a copy of the pic of your goose house and my son and I are going to be building one for our 2 once we get a good dry day.

Haven't had a chance to look at it good yet, from the top it still looks swollen so I'll soak when I get home have to make a run to the feed store. We are making some adjustments to the house we're going to build using your design but I want to be able to walk in to clean and we have some nice size windows that were given to us so we're going to add full size door and put 2 windows in, it gets pretty hot here in the summer time.

Living in the mountains though we do have abundant rocks of all shapes and sizes and I'm wondering if he may have stepped on one the wrong way, there doesn't appear to be a bruise though, I try my best to keep the rocks out of their walk ways but I do think they grow out of the ground.

You may be able to visualize something that way that you would not otherwise be able to see. Sort of like an x-ray, but not quite. Since there is some translucency to the skin, it works well sometimes. If something is in there, in time it will try to force itself out. If the swelling doesn't go down, perhaps a broad spectrum antibiotic and probiotic in the water. It could also be an insect bite. Let me know what you find, if anything.

Thanks for the great info, I had not thought of that. I have an LED flash light that I use for candling, I'll try it, the swelling has gone down quite a bit and I have been soaking his foot the last couple days in warm water and betadine. and examining it too see if anything is coming to the top, but looking with the light will help a lot. Thank you for the advise. No telling what it could be since he never looks where he's going, always walking with his head in the air.

Glad to hear Sammy is on the mend. It's a regular thing for one of my geese to show up with a limp or a scratch (or bite wounds on feet from frisky play in pool), but they always rebound quickly.
