Thank goodness for Google... I'm a first timer as far as raising chicks from a day old, they are two months now but noticed one of my comets yawn.. no bigs i but thought and being a vet assistant I didn't have any experience with livestock and barnyard animals like I do with cats and dogs etc but I am trained for observing so that's what I did.. I noticed she yawned so I watched her and 30 seconds later she yawned again.. I meant to Google it and I forgot, so I saw her do it again today and yup she kept doing it so I grabbed my phone and used trusty Google n sure enough GAPEWORM comes up first on the list and by typing in chicken yawning it came right up... easily treated with apple cider vinegar it says?? I remember seeing treating water with apple cider vinegar but with medicated food I didn't need to I was told, then soon forgot.. Not good.. well they are on mash now which is not medicated and I seem to have at least one with GAPEWORM... She was panting last night in the coupe but it was hot even in northern Maine so I thought to myself it's cooling down so she'll be ok... ill Start treatment tomorrow as oi with have no cider vinegar but saw its one tsp of apple cider vinegar to one gallon of water ratio and it's that easy?? I'm hoping so...all water from now on will be treated I've had really good luck with my 12 chickens (4 different breeds) that are two months old now... my 1 year old intact male cat is still guarding them (although he kills anything and everything feathered or furred, winged or not, and he even got a rabbit cuz it was eating the chicks grain and he terminated it, to my horror) ... He helps me coupe the babies at night even tho most have gotten the hint to go into the coupe n not just find something high and get in it we have raccoons the size of med digs up here in the north woods but my cat is just like an Australian Shepherd, no joke, he heels those chickens in and everything, comes around back side while I'm sending them in.. It's quite amazing but if u are a newbie n notice ur chicken yawning? Keep watch.. it could just be a simple yawn but more than once it's probly GAPEWORM...apple cider vinegar is a must... Now I know..

Did you actually see the worm? If so you need something stronger than apple cider vinegar to purge your chicken. You must use flubenol or aviverm to treat your chickens. Since you work for a vet one of these should be easy to get. Ivermectin does not work against Gapeworm.

AVC will not treat gapeworms or any other type of worms.

Can you take a video of her and upload it to YouTube?

The yawning and panting can be signs of her having trouble breathing.
Respiratory illness is much more common than gapeworm is.

Have you brought any new birds home in the last month or two?

Being a vet assistant, can you or someone in your clinic do a fecal exam? If gapeworms are present, eggs will show up in a fecal. If they do, you treat with fendbendazole (Panacur). As others have stated, ACV will not get rid of gapeworms.

I was a vet assistant in NH prior to relocation to Maine and it was very many years ago so that option about getting my vet to check for fecal worms is out.. bummer ...also got food grade diatomaceous earth but today I'm going to pick up some other stuff u have listed.. these symptoms have stopped and it was extremely hot the day before I saw her doing this but when I saw her yawning continuously it was in the morning after shed been up a couple hours.. I have been checking poop since treating them with the diatomaceous earth and the apple cider vinegar and there is no signs of them anymore because there was.. And that one chicken that was yawning a lot is no longer yawning panting even on the hottest days she's doing great she looks much better and she's the one that had the red mites too and she has been treated for those also (they all have) and I want to be a spokesperson for diatomaceous earth lol it's amazing and she looks like a million bucks but I will be checking into some of the other worm medicines plus we do have a test kit at local feed youill be grabbing one.. Thank u people kindly for letting me know what to do..also had one chicken starting to lose some feathers(not moulting) and I did some inspecting on the feathers and had mites (where I live it's very common) so I went and got diatomaceous earth and I dusted the crap out of their Coop and ventilated well..any place they may lay to dust on the ground to cool off .. They have a chair outside I dusted that I dusted their roosts.. I put it in their food because it's food grade now imma be checking into some of them other medicines you people kindly put up there after I get a test kit to see what's up .I..really wish that I had done a lot more research before taking 12 chickens but I ended up with 12 only because somebody couldn't take the Six they ordered and I already had six and I have not brought in any new Bird's in since, they've all been with me for two months since they were are a couple of days old ..BUT they ate slugs when fervently until they realized they are nasty but that was their first WK or 2 it free range and I hear slugs of the number one offender for worms but now I'm treating everywhere for Slugs with the diatomaceous earth which will a Raticate house flies please slugs any type of anything with an exoskeleton within 48 hours I even put it on my dog and cat and they are flea free now yay... We are also moving so I'm going to be preparing their new coupe with boiling hot water and washing everything down even though there has been no chickens in that building for like 10 years I'm going to make sure that I have it dusted and taken care of before they move in their plus they won't be free range this year over there because it's close to the road so I'll be putting in a fence that should be easier to keep track of what they're eating instead of them just running around on my 5 Acres eating anything they can as far as bugs and slugs and all that stuff but they won't eat slugs anymore but they did it first when they were little and they went crazy on them... I'll be back on to update
