We will be getting another night of snow/sleet/rain. Temperatures get above freezing during the day this week, definitely unusual so early for us, but it's still miserable, damp, and icy/snow.

I cannot hear of 60 degrees anymore, it's depressing, but enjoy it. At least we don't get scorching hot here in the summer, that's the trade off. I will take freezing winters over 90+ degrees during the summer.
I'm with you there, OHLD. We lived down south for a number of years, and I always longed for snow in the winter, and almost died from the heat in the summer. I love having the four seasons, and I'm very happy up north! (Although Cap does make me jealous with her great-looking young garden plants ;))

I don't really consider VA as south because we get snow, and moved from FL! But we lived in Nova Scotia so it doesn't seem like the far North either. Halfway.

Folks, can anyone educate me on pelleted seed? I set my seeds last week in the house, with heat mats and grow lights... Pretty much everything has sprouted but my pelleted seed. Am I going to lose those plants or will they sprout? I had to take the tops off as everyone else was growing like crazy.

I planted some pelleted celery seeds last year and they took a month to come up. I can't say whether that was due to being pelleted or because they were celery seed but every last one of them came up.

What were the seeds? Are you planting on the surface or covering? Most germinate better on the surface.

@rjohns39 , I bought a few pelleted seed last fall b/c they were selling for about 10 cents/packet. This after I've sworn off pelleted seeds since the last dismal failure with them. What can I say, I'm attracted by bright and shiny objects, including seed packets with pretty pictures! I'm not at all impressed with pelleted seed, and IMO, they are a dumb idea. (So, why, oh why did I buy them???) I've had a few seeds sprout. They take at least an extra week to sprout. The moisture has to dissolve the clay coating before it even gets to the SEED. And if the seeds don't damp off b/c of the clay coating, you might get enough seeds to sprout to make it worth while.

The basil seed that was pelleted did sprout, then it all damped off. In spite of the fact that I was using Pro-mix that has the bacteria to combat damping off.
