Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I need to start making my raised beds. Going to try and grow some carrots this year. The stone riddled clay soil isn't very good for that.
I had carrots and beets in my raised garden last year. about the time they sprouted really nicely, the chickens demolished them. They also ate all my pepper plants. This year I have a plan to staple netting to tall stakes and put the stakes in the cinderblock holes all around the garden, so I can move them when I want to garden and maybe it will prevent the chickens from feasting on my vegetables.

I finally got my tomatoes , summer squash and cantaloupe out. Still have to put out the peppers. I like your cinder block garden. Mine is also cinder block, but two blocks high. I have a chicken dust bath that is outlined in cinderblocks. I put parsley and marigolds in them last year. This year- dianthus - maybe mint - haven't decided on it. I even had two carrots start growing in a cinder block hole from a couple of years ago. LOL.

Thanks. I figured one high was enough for us. If I see it's not we can always add to it next year. I still have to get more mulch and topsoil to get the front half finished. Good idea on planting parsley and and mint in the blocks. I have a bunch of herb seeds I need to plant.

Yes, i gave them a sample the day i picked them. No much goes to waste here.
Once you get your goats they can make use of all kinds of other foodstuffs too.

I covered all of my tomato plants last night, even though they were all under tunnels or individual milk jugs. One plant had the jug blow off in our "hurricane winds". So, instead of chasing it down, I just slipped a bucket over the plant. All the rest of the bucket covered plants had a jug as well. This morning when I checked the plants, all survived except for the single plant that only had the bucket. It was frozen beyond saving. An other cold night predicted tonight, most likely below freezing. All plants are double covered, and the seedling flats are in the truck which is tucked into the garage.
