Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I have given up mostly in my gardens. I have been preoccupied making the decision to get my other knee replaced. Plans are for October.

My flower gardens need weeding. My vegetable boxes are a crazy place. Loads of tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans. It's a chaotic mess, and the tomatoes and cucumbers are growing out of control and out of the boxes. I definitely planted too many.

My carrots are absolutely perfect growing in the soft soil in my boxes, and weeding and watering is simple.

Today we are finally getting some rain, which I'm sure will fuel more out of control growth. we can only eat so many cucumbers and tomatoes, thankfully the chickens and turkeys enjoy them too.

first of all good luck with the knee, if your first knee replacement went like it was suppose to, the second one should be the same, some of our friends had no trouble at all, my husband on the other hand , not so good, not sure if it was due to the dr or because my husband always has had problems with scarring but he needs the other knee replaced but won't do it because the first one didn't do so well, he hurts 24 hrs a day in both knees, one nurse told him that the knee he had replaced didn't hurt because its artificial and metal doesn't hurt , maybe not but he says it hurts and i believe him, hes afraid to trust another dr.
i've just started picking beans, yellow mostly, greens are slower but we love beans so eating beans lol, husband likes a slice or two of tomatoes on his beans, i just like tomatoes and they're just coming on, picked a bunch this morning, so happy happy
have mustard greens that need to be picked but for some strange reason, when cooked, kinda tough, have rape (canola) leaves that when cooked just melt in your mouth so tender, i guess i'm trying to say, very happy with the garden this year, everything is doing great
you will do things in your own time:hugs

Thanks, I always hope for the best but expect the worse. I wouldn't be getting this done either if the last one hurt all the time. It shouldn't. I wonder if something was done wrong with your husband's replacement. That's so sad. :( My first knee had dead bone in it from going through chemo which they removed. Maybe you husband has something like that and it wasn't tended to, or his implant wasn't aligned correctly. Doctors do make mistakes. I know how miserable bad knees are.

My Swiss chard needs picking. That's the only cooking greens I grow here. We also will cook and eat our beet tops too. Our suppers here are currently vegetables, with a side of vegetables, with a bowl of vegetables. :)

I do freeze a bit of stuff but not much anymore. Gave up canning too a while back. Much easier just to buy pickles for me these days. Most stuff we eats as it's available. I do grow and store butternut squash, and little sweet pumpkins, but have given up on the rest.

things should go great for you and since you've have one done before you know what to expect, yes the dr's sure do make mistakes, if we had heard before about this dr, would have found another one to be honest. our son who is 45 now, had his right hip replaced last year, 6 months later, had the left one done, he went to a dr in pittsburgh who does football players. jacen is a policeman and went back to work 2 weeks after the surgery on both, his dr was quite impressed at how jacen healed , course jacen has always pushed himself
swiss chard is one green i just can't like, tried several times but just not my cup of tea lol
i also eat the beet tops, husband loves them too since his mother raised him to eat them, in fact he will eat most anything i put in front of him and tell me its good, whether he likes it or not but the only way he will eat okra is fried or stewed sometime. me i love most everything , BUT raw fish(sushi) and swiss chard
tomorrow if its not raining, will go out and pick more beans and i think rape and cook them up with a couple slices of bacon , not sure what else i will make but i like to cook at least one big meal a day, what can i say, thats the way i was raised.
:hugs

I'd more likely eat beet greens than the beets themselves. We eat Swiss chard. OK, DW and I eat it. Sorta similar to spinach but without the tannic 'bite' (I guess) part. We grew spinach as well. DW likes it in omelettes and salad, doesn't like it cooked. Except in spinach artichoke dip (also has cheese).

Beets are best put in a foil pouch, first skinned and cut into eating chunks, add pat of butter, salt, pepper, seal pouch than bake either in the oven or grill until fork tender. They are delicious. :drool

I guess I'm done trying to plant anything other than a few seeds in my raised garden bed.
I've sprained both ankles and strained my chest wall trying to haul and move buckets as and 50 lb. Bags this year. I'm to old for this. And it's hard to admit defeat. I got three trees planted in pots. And that's it for the year.

that i understand, BUT at least i'm ahead of you in one respect, no sprained ankles, but the back and hips sure are hurting, since my husband had the one eye done, i have to move the chicken tractor and its no light weight, husband says the reason i hurt so bad is because i was bending over in the garden(didn't hurt) picking beans and pulling weeds and then moved the tractor for the chickies so altho it has to be done sure will be glad when he can be allowed to help with the tractor. heres hoping you soon be feeling better and back on your feet :hugs
