Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

Pics
April 15th. But thinking i can make some grow tunnels or hot boxes etc.
My frost date isn't until May 15 but we can still get frosts until June. I will start stuff in March and April.

Still debating starting or just buying my flowers this year. I'm tired of piddling around with seedlings. Been doing it for decades. I really hate transplanting, and fungus die offs if I water too much. I think I'm talking myself into buying but I have seeds, so we'll see.

Hi back. :frow

I will start my tomatoes, so technically I'm not being totally lazy if I skip the flowers, but I'm sure I will give in.

I have been just buying my flats of flowers so i want to try starting some. I did some last year. Zinnias were spindly but the marigolds did well and so did the morning glories. My sunflowers were doing great until some critter chewed them off a few inches from the ground!

So maybe we will swap roles this year.

Zinnia are troublemakers to start, and marigolds are angels.

Wild birds seed my flower gardens with sunflower seeds so always some volunteers here. When I try to purposely grow them something always eats the seed.

I do watch for spiders and red ants. LOL. The chickens keep most of the critters to a minimum. Last year, I had a corn plant trying to grow inside the cinder block holes. It is too early here to start plants- I am just doing yard maintenance right now, getting ready to plant early April- we usually get a freeze just around Easter- one last shot at killing the plants. Guess I will put my sour gherkin in a container with a trellis.
Interestingly - or not- I came across three dead moles on top of the ground today- all in a 6 foot circumference in the chicken yard. What could have done that? There are no dig holes- just scratch dips from the chickens. I put out Holey Moley last year to kill the grubs, but that should not poison the moles- just run them off when the food source dries up. The carcasses were dried up and did not look like they had been torn up or eaten by anything- hmmm.

Idk but i wish our moles would die off.

Our last frost date is also May 15th, but we plant early anyhow, just to get a jump on the growing season. Once it's warm enough in the greenhouses, we transfer our seedlings out there, and it protects them from frost.

I know what you mean about starting flowers from seed. We have been buying more started flowers the last few years, and only grow a few kinds from seed. Some kinds of flowers seem to take a very long time to bud, and it's easier to just buy them once they're already flowering. Plus that way, we have more room for starting veggies from seed.
