We have the occasional skunk in the area, but the squirrels are horrendous. I used to think they were cute, now, just big rats with fancy tails. They go into the run area while the hens are free ranging and eat what ever is left of the feed. They also drink from the waterers. Grrrr.
I love squirrel stew.

Not as many squirrels or chipmunks this year. We do have a resident hawk or two. Red tail, I think. So, I think he's helping out in that area. Even though I hear the hawk in the woods, I've been letting the flock out to range. The dog is often out with them, and the roo stands guard in the middle of open spaces. So far, no attempts on the birds. But, I know my luck will run out sooner or later.

In other neighborhood news, it appears that the 2 horse farms on the main drag that my road enters are no longer. One is for sale (that was a horse rescue farm) and the other was a small postage stamp sized space with stall in the garage, small electrified paddock with 2 horses. Those people never should have had horses in the first place. I wish there were laws pertaining to keeping large farm animals that specified minimum housing and pasture requirements. In a lot of these cases, just cause you can, don't mean you should. Those poor horses never got out to exercise, never got ridden. Any how, with the horses gone, the horse feed will be gone, and I bet there will be a whole herd of rats and mice seeking new digs.

Not likely that the horse farm would go to a developer. Though, anything is possible. I don't think there is enough acreage there to make it appropriate for that use.

Maggie loves mice. To watch her eat one is truly disgusting. She will tenderize it well, then hold one part down with her feet, while stretching the rest with her teeth. She will see how far it will stretch before the entrails break. Then she will slurp those down like spaghetti. Hope you've finished your breakfast!! She has yet to catch larger prey, though she sniffs them out, and wants them REAL BAD. She did catch a bird once, but I was able to distract her enough that it got away.
