I gave up trying to grow melons of any kind. Our season is either too short or too cold.
I am building a sort of green house. Maybe I can get a couple of weeks head start and then grow a melon in a container next year.
We lucked out last night. It did not freeze. we have a ton of green tomatoes wanting to turn red. If we make it through tonight, they still have a chance.. We are not going to cover anything.. Gotta have faith.. LOL
yesterday I had a machine shop cut two 2" keyways into by drive shaft. It cost me $40.oo
I was glad to pay so I can finally put the hydraulics back to work. so far this breakdown has cost me $230.oo. big boy toys are expensive.
Friday is my birthday. I will be 78. If the hydraulics hold up as long as the last fix, I will be 93 . then I will not give a s&%#t anymore.
right now the tractor is 65 years old. I think he will outlive me.. LOL

If the temperature does not get too low, I have been able to save the garden from frost temperatures by turning the sprinklers on and leaving them on until everything is thawed after the sun comes up. Due to the large area and the constant wind, covering the garden is not an option.

Due to the haphazard way I got into planting in containers, I have 60 containers of tomatoes with varying heights of stakes. there is no easy pretty way to cover them..
I have used the sprinkling method to save my apple blossoms. a couple of times.
Next year there well be only 8 tomato plants.
that is what I planned for this year. but then my daughter kept bringing me her extra plants. A few at a time, here and there.
eventually that is how I ended up with 60 tomato plants in containers. She brought the plants and containers, all I had to do was put dirt into the containers. She also provided the dirt..

Is she coming to pick tomatoes too?
I have 24 plants and I feel that I have too many to deal with.
Today's 28°F finished off the garden. Now I have to wait for the picked tomatoes to ripen. I have some that I plan on canning today. I already made 14 pints of green tomato relish two days ago.
