Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I’m in NE Texas where y’all at?.. 084DFB1C-B32B-410F-A77C-0D11E55E4E66.jpeg

I am right in the center of Wisconsin,
Where sth 29 and Interstate 39 intersect.
today we are expecting snow flurries again. It won't stay long.
It has been awhile since I wrote.
I will tell you what I did.
Saturday I charged up the battery and rode the lawn tractor down to my new garden.
The trees I planted last summer all have sap in their trunks. good thing.
the rhubarb is coming up.
the garlic is coming up. it has to be mulched.
no sign of asparagus yet.
the grapes made it through winter without the rabbits chewing them off. I will wait for them to show signs of growing. then I will build another arbor for the newest ones
my tractor is still at the fixit shop.
getting anxious for it's return. If I can't plow the garden, I won't plant any corn.

After the snow melted off yesterday I found 10 asparagus popping up. I am sure this morning's 23°F did not do them any good.
I wouldn't worry about the asparagus. the worst thing might be that the tips might be bent.
I see you have guineas. I surely miss mine. Do yours eat these japanese beetles ? we are plagued with them.

On cold mornings the asparagus freezes off, withers and then has to come back later. The individual stalks that get exposed are ruined and cannot be eaten, at least they can't be eaten by me. I do not follow the "do not pick for the first three years rule" early in the spring. If it is up high enough to harvest (2"+) and it looks like it will freeze that night, I pick them. Better for me to eat them than have them wasted by freezing.

One huge advantage of living here is that there are no Japanese beetles ever. We also do not ever get cicadas. No poison ivy either.

Hey Flint. You sure have a lot of different tomato varieties  Being heirloom I assume they are indeterminate?

Last year someone gave my MIL 3 "heirloom" plants. No other info and they probably didn't know what they had anyway. She has no place to put tomatoes at the retirement community so she gave them to me. Sadly they didn't do well.

If you click on the person's location at the bottom of their info next to a post it will pop up in a Google map on a separate page. Very nice feature.

my tractor is still at the fixit shop.
"Still" like all winter or "still" like it has gone back in?

Bruce, the tractor is still , as in the week of thanksgiving, still at the fixit shop.
they had a ton of big farmer's machinery to fix,. I understand, but it doesn't take a long time to change the head gasket. half a day , maybe.
I had all the metal removed for them.
all they have to do is take the gas tank off. four bolts. I have to give them another call .
