Gardening gurus!! I need your help!!

Good! I didn't think it mattered, but I wasn't sure. I know I would have to cover them from the free ranging chickens, since the garden will have a fence around it to keep them out, but it would be nice to have more room in the actual garden! And I am getting tons of seeds from the seed swap, so I'll need all my garden space for the other stuff!

But I was thinking of something like having a few mounds in the yard, surrounded by grass, that's why I was wondering! I know I would need to keep the actual mounds weeded, but around it would be all right, right?

Another one! Can I use pine shavings as mulch? I'm not sure which would be cheaper, but I was just wondering if they would be okay?

Mulch is pretty darn cheap if you buy from a landscaping company rather then buy bags at like home depot. Less of a headache too...

I wouldn't suggest pine as it breaks done much faster... I throw it in my compost pile with my chicken poo... Most of my hardy mulch I put on my gardens last year is still there. I need to throw on some fresh mulch over it, not a lot though. $25 a truck load, can't beat that.
