So, my husband goes into Walmart today to get some veggie seeds (don't ask why we are planting this late in the season... we're going to try anyway). He asked five employees where their garden/vegetable seeds are. Not one of them had any idea what he was talking about. They honestly didn't know that you plant seeds and grow food.

Interesting... all five of them were under 20 years old!

What is going to happen to the next generation when/if our country can't supply the food at the grocery store and we are forced to be more self sufficient and supply their own food? This goes along with people who have no idea that eggs actually come out of a chicken!

They'll starve leaving the rest of us more land to plant.

Well I'm semi kidding, but if they made it thru 12 years of schooling and paid that little attention.....

Remember , they are not all this way. I have 2 sons that know their way around a hoe , they know how to save seed, what open-polinated, hybrids and heirlooms mean. They listen to me rant about bio-diversity and understand that meat is not born on a little orange piece of styrafoam.

I have many friends my age (aint tellin) that have zero understanding of all the above, so as long as there is some in the next generation being educated , there is hope. It is our responsibilty to pass it on. It's that important.

Doesn't surpise me. My son did a project showing chickens and their breeds and what color of eggs they lay. So my son asked the class what color or colors of eggs do chickens lay ? 100% of the class said White only !!! So my son gathered all the colors of eggs our hens lay and brought them to class to show them. Then the teacher goes what do I do with these ? My son goes well .. you get a pan with some butter and break it in the pan.. I busted up laughing.

My in laws see me as weird because I kill my own meat chickens. I don't care about getting dirty heck I get pooped in all the time. But you know should something happen and they need food guess who's door they will be knocking on...

I work at Wal-Mart...that's probably not the reason they were confused. Most people purchase the plants that are already growing...not seeds and again, usually not at this time of year.

You mean to tell us that had they been asked a few weeks ago, they would have known??

people up here in the northern part of the country are still buying seeds and my wife just planted cucumbers and squash seeds 3 days ago..

and does your walmart sell carrot sets and beet sets and radish and bean and pea sets ?? our walmart does not in our town..

If the country comes to that, you will not have to guard your valuables as much as your food stash.. people will kill for food if they have none..

I work at the garden center and walmart and we just got threw sending all our seeds back. They were recalled due to the time of year.
