gas tank doors

My brother just got a VW Jetta and the tank is on the passenger side. In NJ, we don't have to pump our gas, so it's really only a bit of a pain for the employees, who have to walk around the car to take the money, etc. I think I would forget quite a bit too, about the side the gas door is on!

we could go back to haveing the gas cap under the rear license plate. Then there would be not which side is your fill on.

The last several cars I have had have all been Subies, and the thing is always on the passenger side. Every gas pump I can think of has two sides, so you just pull up to whatever side works for your car.
Now, I want to live where all you guys do where attendants pump the gas! I need to buy gas for the drive home from work today and currently it is 5 below zero out there. Brrr!
I remember cars that had them under the license plate, and it made me think of my first car, a VW bug. I can't remember where the fuel door was on that, but it was somewhere really weird - like in the front, I think? There in the trunk somewhere?

OK, I'll take a crack at this. Though I did work for GM, I'm not sure why the tank fill is on either side of the car. I liked it when they were in the middle …

I don’t see any hazards of having the fill on the passenger side, but I believe it is easier for the driver to open his/her door when it is on the passenger side. This way the driver’s door doesn’t whack the steel or concrete bollard around pump because the driver’s door is not on the pump side.

I think the manufacturers are full of it, its not like someone chooses their new car for what side the fill is on. I would think it would be standardized.
I would think that's the problem-pulling up to the pump and facing another car. One of you will have to back out.

I think if you cant back up at the pump or maneuver good enough to get out of this situation, you probably shouldnt be driving anyway.

Me either. I always forget which side mine is on and then when I pump the gas I usually get it on my hands and on my shoes....

I believe most of the cars I've driven have had a passenger-side fuel door. I also don't see what the big deal is. As far as two cars facing each other to pump, I've done it many times and never had to actually back out of anywhere. There's usually a pretty ample amount of room to do what you need to do to get out of there.
