Shifter bushing is gone, so the box is super crunchy. We're replacing that this weekend. In a bug, there's a steel rod that runs in the tunnel from the shifter up front to the nosecone of the trans under the back seat. That has to come all the way out, the bushing replaced through a 2 inch wide hole in the tunnel, and then everything put back. It's about a 4 hour job and I LOATHE doing it.

Also have new plug wires and need to chase down an issue with the throttle cable binding. Then sync the carbs, do some other minor adjustments (valves, alt belt, nut and bolt the engine) and it should be ready to rock.

Darn I forgot about this thread, thanks for reminding me

First job sounds like a JOB!

I hate it. it's probably the most annoying part of maintaining a VW. The bushing itself is made of a plastic that feels like the stuff they make birdies for badminton out of, and they last 4-5 years tops here in the desert (because heat and they're just crap).

This time I got a delrin bushing from a company that does EV conversions for VW's that's allegedly "lifetime", so if it is actually decent I may never have to do it again on this car. :p

4 hours of headache later, shifts like buttah! Found a broken trans mount though so we'll have to replace that when the parts get here.

Engine swap. This one's really slow and complains a lot.

We had to do trans mounts. That means pulling the motor, unbolting the trans from the swing plates at the drum, unbolting the shifter, unbolting the rear cross member from the frame horns, then sliding the whole trans back about 6" to get the front mount our and replaced. Then all of that in reverse, replace the rear mounts (what he's doing here), put the motor back in, re-adjust the shifter to make sure we have all gears, and test drive. About an 8 hour round trip in the driveway with hand tools. We also retorqued the heads since we had the engine pulled. Ran out of daylight so tomorrow the engine goes back in and we will do our testing.

Last time I had to do this was 20 years ago. I am not "20 years ago young" anymore. I'm beat. :p

Well thought id share yesterday I drove about an hour and a half about half an hour before I got to my destination my car all of a sudden got twice as loud with a different noise and misfiring First I obviously opened the hood to see if I could see anything visually wrong my AC belt that was there 2 days prior was gone

ok although I didn’t think that being gone could cause my problems. I was right I got it home today and got it jacked up and was able to get underneath turns out my passenger side exhaust the first part of the exhaust decided it was gonna completely detach from the headers so I have something to do this next week at least lol
