Geese and Goslings

I would wait a couple of days and let the babies rest up and get their land legs under em. Then I would introduce them. The last adoption I did was over a period of days...waiting for the babies to be less dependent on heat because they were a little older. It went just fine. It has been a weird year as far as weather goes. I kept the babies in my garage under a heat lamp until they were about 12 days old. Then they moved to the barn with the rest of the flock and their adoptive trio, two geese and a gander. The babies that I earlier adopted into the flock were 5 Roman's and 3 Sebbies. They were initially adopted by three single ganders. There is another trio, (2 geese and one gander) that belong to that group. But, when the first group of babies were ready to be "out and about" the trio was busy setting on their own nests with the gander standing guard - they took over the babysitting and parenting, only after they realized their eggs were not going to hatch - now it's just one happy group of 14. The second group is the adult trio and 4 goslings. The two groups interact during the day but at night each group likes to be in its own box stall in the barn.

IF your geese adopt the goslings there would be no reason for anygoose inside. Archie or Ethe will take care that they are warm enough. usually tucked under a wing so they can't wanderoff and get chilled. If they DON"T adopt then you will need a brooder some where to keep the goslings warm.

As a kid I had a pet gander imprinted on me. When he was around two years old, I bought six goslings. He adopted these goslings at first sight and was an extremely protective father.

Thanks for all the advice!!!

I would love to see pics of your flock too!!!

Called the hatchery today and confirmed they were shipped out this evening. Oh I hope they get here safe and sound. Speaking of hatcheries, I am not in love with Murray right now- I requested straight run and they said all they had left were 2 males, 2 females and 5 straight run and wouldn't sell them to me as straight run- this was two weeks ago. When I called today to confirm shipping, I asked if the younger goslings would be safe with the older goslings in the same box and was told that they were all just born- I then asked why I had to pay EXTRA money for sexed goslings who weren't sexed until today (I confirmed this) and the woman couldn't say why (but she did say it was the manager who I spoke to the first time), refused to refund me the money and just said it was company policy to charge my card when ordered (before the goslings were even hatched), didn't care that a customer was unhappy or that her manager was not an honest person and of course her manager was not available to speak to me. I am so mad I could spit!!! I wrote them an unfriendly email telling them I was disgusted with their customer service and would never be ordering from them again due to their disgusting business practices. I will honestly be surprised if they even respond. I didn't have any problems with them when I got archie and ethel from them and the only reason I ordered from them again was because archie and ethel are such sweethearts.

after a very lenghty talk the hatchery has made it right. just wanted to let you know.

No and I'm getting really worried!!!!! The heat wave we are in is unreal right now. I'm sure I'm driving the postmistress nuts as I keep calling, thank goodness this is farming country and she understands. She has my number and promised to call the second they come in. I really hope they make it here alive and well.

I just had an adoption here. A friend/fellow goose lady had a surprise hatch of 6 Pilgrims and my goose was sitting on bad eggs. Friends eggs hatched and mine didn't so I bought a pair, removed the goose from the nest and gave her the goslings. I broke her last egg (and I am forever traumatized by the smell I nearly puked on site). Anyway, now its the next day and they are her babies now.

A couple weeks ago when my other goose hatched 5 eggs, one baby died after getting through the fence so I took away the rest except just leaving them one for a few weeks until they got bigger. When I gave them back it was like nothing ever happened. Geese love geese. I don't think introducing them will be a problem. The geese even took the ones I incubated without a problem.
