Geese "coop" requirements...

Moving forward; the final floor measurements are 8' by 63". I've collected pressure treated 2 by 6's for the floor frame and 2 by 8 regular boards (paint them?) for the flooring, they will be spaced slightly (like a deck) for any needed drainage (thanks gd).

It ended up that I have a pair of Buffs shipping out of Metzer the 31st of this month... bringing us to my next question, the door measurements. Gd, you mentioned they don't like to "duck", can you ballpark a mature height and width? ....or someone with American geese at least two years old.

I'll be creating a door within a (humane entry) door. If that bear comes around (here again last night) they can excape to safety of the coop during the day if needed...with out him able to fit so this is crucial. (Dave's book gives me weights but not mature dimensions).

This same size will be used on the side exit also for the "water deck"; welded wire enclosed swimming/drinking area. The w deck will be attached to the 8' side, measuring 4'8"...all presure treated framing. Question...how close to space studs on floor to keep 1" by 2" wire, with the combined mature weight of just under 40lbs, from sagging. The pool will have it's own support (I'll go into detail about swimming area plans later as we won't need it for a while...also want to point out that I know that wire space is not suited for goslings, will temp cover w/ 1/2" hardware cloth). Besides, they will live in our home for a week or two.

We have already established the walls height will be six feet. There will be a stationary window facing the w deck, door and operational window facing my home, back wall solid, other side operational window (hardware cloth inside windows, sop)

Slanted shingled 5/8"roof, wired vents on either side. Closing thought...does anyone collect the water off the coop roof into rainbarrels for swimming water replenishment?

Thank you all so much; wish us luck. : )

thanks for your final plan, it's the best help I've gotten in my searches so far. is it completed now? also, how secure is your property. ours is surrounded by horse fence, totally not goose proof. I'm trying to plan our goose house and I'm not finding a lot of info on how much encouragement they need to stay on the property. any advice you have would be really helpful.

My geese stay on my property without it being fenced in. They pretty much stay out of the woods and on the grassy areas. I have never had them leave (4 acres).

My geese sit out in the worst weather even though they have an 8'X4' house with a wide, doorless opening. If it's windy they'll huddle in front of it for a wind break, or they'll sit behind their 8ft. round stock tank. Sometimes even though I'm hiding from the wind, they're out in the middle of the field tucked in together. I don't think they're fazed by the weather much. I'm in Colorado.

Does anyone know how ducks are with the weather? Are they more like geese or do they need alot more shelter, like chickens? If so, can ducks live with chickens?

I have an Embden gander and two geese, they can watch the ducks growing up in a pen, I am hoping they'll get used to the ducks and let them live with them and share their stock tank, anyone know what the chances are for that? Or do I need separate fencing and another stock tank?.....or a pond?

You know, I've never seen a goose coop let a lone shelter for a goose. Does anyone have pictures? I would love to see them. I have to make a shelter for my Sebbies soon. Right now they are in a brooder box with some chicks. Not to worry, they are all out together all day enjoying plenty of grass, water and feed. No the baby geese (2) do not nibble on the chicks..... lol. They are one big happy family. The 4 chicks think the 2 geese are the parents. The chicks are older by 4 days.... hahaha. I have ducks and I've noticed that steps seem to work well for them. Lets look at it this way. Put on a pair of flippers and walk up a ramp......... it ain't gonna happen. Steps are a lot easier! As for the geese, they do pretty well but they haven't totally mastered those huge flippers just yet.

My husband is converting this unused playhouse into a goose coop. I hope to use the top portion for Guinea Fowl some day. We plan on putting fencing all around it until they get old enough to totally free range. Right now they are only 3-4 weeks old. He's enclosing the area under the house as their night house, and the area next to it is going to be their "porch".

Gotta brag on my husband. Here is our goose coop finished. Geese have been in there for 2 nights now. Not sure how comfy they are but I'm sure loving the easy cleanup. The left side is their porch which will be nice in the winter to shield them from the wind during the day.
