Hi all, my wife and I have been going back and forth almost daily about the sex of our Ameraucauna. Thus far no crowing, and no spurs. It is the only chicken we have that likes to jump on the backs of the hens and bite the neck, though.

    Thanks!

110% cockerel. See those long, skinny pointed feathers at the base of his tail? Those are saddle feathers and only the males get them like that. And he has skinny pointed hackle feathers on his neck. Not only the feathers point to boy, but the fact that he has been jumping on the hens backs. That's how they mate.

On another note, a lot of hens will get spurs as well, so that's really no indication of gender. And some hens will crow. It's not common, but it does happen. It's a dominance thing. [IMG]

Ok, ok, I stand in shame. I'll do some Googling but just to be lazy -- what's an "EE"?

    Thanks again.

It's a cockerel, and definitely NOT an Ameraucana. It's an Easter Egger, a mutt chicken with a blue egglaying ancestor.
