genetically altered meat birds

Wall street Journal this morning had an article about GM corn. Apparently, the ear worm is getting resistant to the the bacteria gene used to kill it. (BT) Which is really bad, because now we have ear worms resistant to an organic pesticide (BT), which will hurt both organic and non-organic farmers. BT is used to get rid of all sorts of caterpillars on many, many crops. If this resistance becomes widespread it could become much harder for organic farmers to grow things like tomatoes, broccoli, corn and cabbage.
Plus, farmers growing GM corn will also be spraying their corn with nasty, strong chemicals, since their GM corn isn't able to kill off ear worms anymore.

I cannot say enough just how scary I find this whole idea. Pretty soon our real honest to goodness chickens are going to be rare because of the fact that the big companies want to completely alter the genetic structure of the chicken. What are they thinking???

It just makes me firmer in my resolve to never buy any meat products that are not organic, farm fresh or that I grew myself.

So far I grow my own pork, lamb, goat and chicken. This year I am getting turkeys and ducks and possibly going to be trying some local emu meat. The only thing I can't grow is beef because I don't have enough room but I buy that locally from my butcher and it's pasture fed organic Angus.

Pretty soon I won't be able to go the grocery store at all way scary.

This Daily Mail thing makes me chuckle. The Daily Mail isn't a very reliable source. But even if it's true, keep in mind that no chickens raised by commercial industry today are artificially genetically altered. They are what they are due to literally years and years of selective breeding.

Not that I like grocery store birds or anything, but just to re-state that fact.

Two weeks ago on the Chicken Whisperer show, the geneticist that makes ISA Browns, was explaining how they used a gene gun on the birds. Um............

I didn't think that changed the DNA sequence does it? Because GMO crops have had their actual genes or DNA sequences altered.

• The chromosomes are long strands of genes*
• Since the chromosomes come in pairs, the genes also come in pairs
• Genes are also located in very small compartments called mitochondria that are randomly scattered in the cytoplasm of the cell
outside the nucleus
• In each of the genes there is a piece of genetic information which guides our growth, development and
health and is in the form of a chemical code, called the genetic code
• The genetic code in the DNA, is virtually identical across all living organisms and is like a recipe book for the body to make
proteins

* as in, Gene Gun

Referred to as genetically engineered. I believe it's modified with another layer gene, as opposed to say tomatoes, that are engineered with fish genes, or whatever. Still it's modified. Now they are working on loading ISA Browns with human antibodies, so you can eat an egg instead of getting a flu shot. No thanks.
Let a chicken be a chicken.

genes are what make up DNA

Didn't keep up or read the whole thread, but DNA is just a pile of nucleic acids, which contains codes for genes. Most DNA is what is often considered "garbage" or has no known function and does not code for any gene per say. DNA is bound to histones, making a nuclesome, that can bundle up to make the ever so recognizable condensed chromosomes we see pictures of.

A gene gun is just another method to deliver DNA, usually plasmid DNA.

I've never used a gene gun myself, just transfection via chemical or electrical means.
