Genetics - Artificial Insemination... How do you do it...

Well, seems I may have to resort to that to protect my Delaware rooster's comb and wattles till I can fill a couple more orders of hatching eggs. Then, sweet Isaac will have to go live elsewhere or the hens will.

I hear you... Im trying to cross my wild turkey TOM to my White Turkey Female to create a breed that can breed on its own. The white turkey female is WAY to big... but I think my wild tom might just do the trick.. The "PUZZLE pieces" FIT with a Wild turkey and a white turkey, but two white turkeys... the Puzzle Pieces dont fit.

It can indeed. After a quick search I found an older publication about possible freezing methods entitled 'Possible Commercial method of Freezing Chicken Semen.'

From my college classes on breeding and genetics I vaguely remember freezing and thawing bull semen. The process utilized liquid nitrogen, thermo-controlleg hot water baths, etc. So I'm not sure how cost efficient it would be for small time use. It's also going to lower your fertility rate, but that may be negligible if the semen in question is of vastly superior bloodlines.

In the commercial poultry setting most breeders use fresh semen (generally used the same day as collection). Though I have seen semen extenders on the market that claim to keep semen viable for up to 7-10 days.

I'm just wondering what your considering freezing semen for. Lots of possibilities here if the setups can be procured at reasonable prices.

ETA: Here's a study done on freezing poultry semen that seems to be more recent than the above publication: Effects of type of freeze straw and thaw temperature on the fertilizing capacity of frozen chicken semen . So it's definitely done.

I wonder if I can find a step-by step guide for home methods ...

Ahhh I can see why you're considering freezing. The hard part of shipping semen would be temperature flucatuations in either direction that could kill the sperm. I wonder what your fertility would be if you put the semen in straws and just popped them in the freezer, and then shipped them in a cooler with cold-packs. You just have to ensure that it stays frozen for the whole trip. Definitely not clinically recommended, but it just might get the job back for your situation. Heck I bet you could probably even try just freezing the semen in pipettes (which you can use to both collect and inseminated). That would save you from having to transfer it from one container to another.

The hard part would be how to thaw it. A few water baths (ice bath, to slightly warmer bath, etc) might do the trick. If you're both patient you could try a few methods. It would be really interesting to see what kind of fertility rates you can get.

Can you tell I'm really into this? Haha!

Ok Cammy, it sounds like we are onto something here!! LOL!!
Now just how to ship it the cheapest way!!

I'd get a box, and some styrofoam (the thicker the better). Line the box with the styrofoam. Add Ice pack and semen. Ta-da! (If you really want some extra insulation you can use newspaper with the styrofoam as well.

You just need a box big enough for the ice pack. The pipette shouldn't take up much room. Though I would spend the extra money to overnight it. Don't want that rooster gold to start melting on its own.

You are getting into this. You just might it yourself now. HAHA

Okay, I am thinking.... Get two small ice packs, after collecting, place the vial between the two ice packs and freeze. That way it will be like a seal. Then ship in styrofoam.

Hey Jen, why don't try freezing some and then using it on a hen. But of course you would have to make sure she wasn't fertile already, or we wouldn't know if it works.

Hmmm, much do tons of thinking.

Well Cammy the only problem with that is I don't have any way to keep them apart
to make sure she wouldn't be fertile. hmmmmmmmmmm I am gonna have to think about
this!!
