German New Hampshire

OK folks, the NH at Nationals were beautiful, glorious things. I know some of them were German lines, but do not know about others. HOWEVER, there were DQ's for stubs. So check your birds out!

Not sure what you mean by "stubs"?? Are you talking combs, as in sprigs, or feather stubs on the shanks/toes? Sorry, might be different lingo with this breed than it is with Marans.

Feather stubs on the legs. I am hoping this isn't a general problem with these birds. I have yet to check mine, got home too late last night, and too rushed to do more than feed and take a quick glance this morning.

Thanks for clarifying that. Where are feather stubs coming from in this breed? Is there something behind them with feathered shanks??

Wow, my Marans girls should be so lucky to have Walt's leghorn's shank feathers!

Thanks for posting that Kathy.

I was talking to Craig Russell at Crossroads, who was telling me similar tales about things showing up after years and years of closed flock breeding - faults just show up after floating around in the genes for ages.

I assume one does not breed those birds on in order to try to get rid of it entirely in a flock.

Neither of my Germans have stubs nor the roo. Whew! I do have what appears to be different lines almost. One hen is taller and longer without the black flecking on the neck area . She is the one with the wry tail the other is shorter but perfect in color and size. No wry tail or stubs or things on her comb. I love her. Gloria Jean

None of the birds that I got from Kathy ended up with stubs. I did see one in person, and a picture of another one. I did have one wry tail, and a cockerel that seams he might keep a split tail. Still overall these birds grew out very very nicely. I have one cockerel that is exceptionally nice. If he was a half pound heavier and just a bit broader across the back, he would be something. Proportionally he is nice, his color is great, marked well, good with the pullets, etc. etc. My cockerel to pullet ratio was in favor of the pullets. All of the pullets are nice, but I will either move forward with two or four. I will figure that out this spring. What I need is more chicks. Especially some from a large cock/hen.
