Hey KATHY,i just had a bunch of our new hamps hatch today,it was begun...yay!!!!!
Great news DM. I counted today and i think i have 20 hatched and a lot more on the way. My plan is to raise a bunch and cull cull cull.
I've been casually following this thread. I have a couple of question which may well have been answered along the way.
1) How is this line for growth rate and size? In the past, many of my inquiries about new Hampshires have been answered with the disclaimer that "this line is on the small side". Is the German line different in this regard?
2) Who is selling hatching eggs this spring? I've looked in the "for sale" section and found only one listing.
Thanks,
Tim
Banjoejoe, you said "they are larger than most USA line New Hamps with much better color and typ". I would agree that the German Line does have good size but I would have to disagree at least in part on the better color and type. The German line is way to dark in the body and lack the proper ticking in the hackle in the females. They are definately a project that is on going but a good quality American line New Hampshire would win at a show every time. These birds are very attractive to look at but the color conflict with the APA standard will hinder them winning top honors at a show. The type also has some issues as alot of them are to big and bushy in the tail. There are a few lines of quality American New Hampshires still out there but they are difficult to find and attain as the older breeders don't advertise or use the internet. Like I said, they are a project and hopefully in the next 5-10 years we can use these German birds along with the existing American lines to bring the New Hampshire back to a level at which they can compete on a National level but right now they are not there.
