Wow, there are some pretty birds on this thread!! What a beautiful breed!

I recently (this past week) hatched some GNH chicks, and am curious about their down color... would love any feedback you might have on them...

I was able to get a broody bantam cochin pullet to adopt them, so that's who they are with...



One of the lighter color chicks also has a black/dk brown spot on it's head... and I can already see differences in how their wing feathers are growing out, can I tell already if they are roos/pullets by that??

no you won't be able to tell by down color....at about 6 weeks you will notice wattles coming in on the roos


i added the pic (even though its not very good) so you can see the difference between the two in the upper left and the one in the upper right

I was also curious about the differences in their down-feathering... do they usually all look the same? Or could I have some sports? Also... 2 of them have more black coming in on their wings, that was why I was wondering if you could tell at a young age pullets/roos, or, again, could I have some sports? I'm just not familiar enough with this breed to know and couldn't find a lot of other info on doing a web search...

I can see that the chicks in the above pic are looking more like roos...

I am new to this chicken thing, but New Hampshires are DEFINATELY on my list, especially the German ones.Wow! Gorgeous birds! Anyone out there know where to find them in WI?

Sorry I missed this first go round Chris! How's everything at your place? Did you get that cabinet incubator all filled up with eggs and are now overrun with chicks?

Anyway, I am loving the birds I got from you. The three girls are in the breeding pen right now with Oden, since he isn't related to them. I have 8 eggs in the incubator from them right now, but they haven't been in long enough to candle yet. I hope those eggs are fertile since I have to let them out tomorrow. I need to get my Dark Cornish in that pen since I have chick orders to fill.
All my other pens are filled with roosters awaiting the axe man and chicks growing out! Looks like it is time for yet another room addition in the coop. If I keep adding on, the coop is going to be as big as our house soon....lol.

I was wondering how a breed like New Hampshire that was created in the USA(bred by Americans) would wind up having to be sent to Germany for them to recreat them for us and send them back to us in the USA and then undoubtly (the German blood) takes 100% preference over our New Hampshire that was born in the USA ???

It looks like we are pretty weak and will probably let the german line run until another fancy name comes along just like we did to the Original New Hampshire !!!

Maybe you should inquire in Germany for some Pics .

We undoubtly let them slip away .
