German New Hampshire

Love heritage birds....love to see many reach SOP again as well...That said, I would post about a hatch I have in the works with a strain cross of New Hamps. Jeremy Woeppel of XW Poultry in Nebraska shipped me 2 dozen of his German New Hampshire cross onto Good Shepherd's (Reese) American New Hampshire line. I have included pics of the breeders and the eggs I am incubating....hatch date is forthcoming on 2/21...excited to see what this cross produces. I will post pics of the chicks and attempt to update through grow out of the ones I am able to keep, since I am only a hobbyist with limited space right now.

Well my German /American (Reese-good shepherd) New Hamps have hatched and thought I would post some pics at 2 days old. they are very large, calm and vigorous!!
It will be fun watching these 17 chicks grow out. I appreciate Jeremy letting me try some of these out. I think I am going to love them

This male looks very good!

Yes, Jeremy's male is very nice I think too...I believe he's bred from kathinmo's (Timberline poultry)stock. The hens are good shepherd american NH's...they are not as fancy as the big tailed German hens with black tipped hackles...but I presume Reese has been breeding for meat and egg production while keeping the SOP in mind perhaps secondary...unfortunately the american line of NH's was driven down while the germans built it up (from what I have read)...I have not asked Jeremy his intent with crossing the German male onto the GS females...perhaps he is wanting to eventually achieve the best of both lines/strains into a strain of his own mind's eye...should prove interesting to see how my cross chicks grow out. Jeremy has hatched well over 100 of these cross chicks thus far this season. I would love to see the NH's regain popularity beyond fad. Lots of worthiness in NH in my novice opinion.

I am anxious to see how those chicks turn out from him over the Reese pullets.
I will be sure to post pics of the grow out...I just have 17...maybe we can get Jwhip to post some of his 'keepers' from the 100+ he has hatched too. I think one other member (catdaddyfro?) may have a batch too from this cross. Kathy I guess we could call these your 'half grandkids'

What IS the difference between the German and American NH's?? I posted a couple of pages ago and sure enough I ended up with 2 roos and one pullet, although the one I thought would be a pullet ended up a roo, and viceversa, but the other one I thought was a roo did indeed turn out that way... I really love their feathering, very pretty birds so far!!

Wow! that was fun, but i gave out at page 10.
I am home sick today and just got my GNH eggs in the mail.(thanks Maria!) They are orginaly from Kathy's line. But I did not get them from her. (next time) So i am sitting here reading up.

I got my first NH roo last summer. And he was forced on me. I had to take him, to get 3 Hamburg hens. I did end up selling him, and have regretted it since. But then I found the GNH! Oh Baby!

15 eggs go in the incubator tomorrow! This is my second batch, I have 7 left, of 15, in my incubator now. They are 2 days late. But the power went out here at about week 1 1/2. I had all my chicks and eggs in the living room around my wood burning stove. But I think I lost the eggs anyway. The hamburg eggs are not hatching either, and they ALWAYS hatch.

I plan to breed them side by side with my Hambar chickens (also sitting on the counter "resting" before going in the incubator tomorrow) (oh! Thanks Kieth!) I am more drawn to the GNH, so plan to take my Hambars that way. (sorry Kieth)

I will keep an eye here and share in about 21 days!
