Yes thankfully I invested in pet insurance when he was a puppy... I pay 30.00 a month and have a$100.00 deductable each year but it pays for the vet visits, shots, meds, dentalcare and emerengcies... I ended up only paying a few hundred of that $2400. I would not have had the money if I did not have pet insurance and who knows what I would have done... I love mu pup as if he was a child

I hope yours has a speedy recovery

I would agree with the post about the location of the stitches and probably why it came undone. Try crating the dog for a week or two to keep the sutures intact. Good luck!!

I hope he's OK now.

Now for my rant.

What the heck kind of vet is that? He/ she should be ashamed of themselves!!!! Bad words Bad words! Won't take payments.....won't come in after hours to fix a botched job?

This might be a little extreme but I would get copies of all photos and picket the vets office. Call the local police first and ask them what you need to do legally to protest. They will tell you things like no yelling, don't disrupt pedestrians or car traffic and they will tell you where you can protest. You can't be on the vets property. Here in my town (can you tell I've don't this before) the town owns the property from the center of any road out 25 feet. As long as I stayed where I was supposed to I was doing this legally.

As a courtesy, call the police and let them know what you are planning. Believe me the vet will call them and you don't want to surprise the police with something this big. Call a few newspapers also and the local TV station a day before.

Don't use the vets name. You can be sued for defamation of character. Put on your sign "ask me how ex. Pleasantville Animal Clinic treated me and my dog after his stitches opened after surgery". Be nice and TRUTHFUL and you won't get into trouble.

Rotten so and so!

The reason for the charges are not just because pets are viewed as family (mine are though) but because more can be done today to make procedures and treatment better and safer. It is also the great expenses of overhead--taxes, mortgage or rent (often depends on the location of the clinic as city vets pay more), insurance, staff (to clean the surgery room, kennels, clean and sterilize instruments, receptionist, technicians for nursing care, products used to clean etc. ), anesthesia, sutures, medications on hand and all the necessary emergency drugs must be kept at all times, etc. I managed veterinary hospitals and the costs are often higher than a doctor's office because they have to be able to xrays, do lab work, surgery and other procedures many Doctor offices don't anymore. Veterinarians do their work because they love animals and doctors should care about people (one hopes they both do) but both have to keep their doors open. It isn't a matter of cost but it is a matter of a good job where this was obviously an issue.

I am not going to defend the treatment the vet gave the OP after hours--that was very unprofessional and certainly a lack of compassion and integrity!!

I am so sorry you experienced this. This was the real issue and I am in agreement with all the anger over it. If I was given such treatment the America Veterinary Medical Board would here about it as well as the State Board.

As having had many well loved pets I send my very best wishes for your beloved dog.

It's more common to find a vet that DOESN'T take payments than one who does. The reason is very very simple - been burned one too many times. I'm lucky that my vet WILL take payments for emergency procedures - provided you are a long-term client in good standing. Too often, people who have never taken their dog to the vet since it's first puppy shots will show up with a dog that needs hundreds or thousands of dollars in care, sign a promise to pay and then *poof* you never see them again.

just a funny take on the average day in the life of a vet (NOTE: not anyone on this forum, just have seen people like this all the time at my vet's office)
