Getting chicks in the coop at night??

Yes a plain white bulb and yes I had to pick them up and actually put them in the hen house at first. But like I said on the 3rd night when I went out there they were in the house all lined up on the perch. I left the light on for about 5 nights. I turned off the bulb and they go in there as soon as it gets dark. On a side note the first time we let the come out of the coop and roam around the yard it took us 30 minutes to chase them down and get back in, now I open the door and call them, chick chick chick and they come out. When I'm ready for them to go back in I kinda herd them up and they all go right back in. And by the way they are all only 10 weeks old so still babies but already smart!


I just took this tonight.

Last night i replaced the heat lamp with a 60w bulb. After letting them range around for about 2 hours I rounded them up and back in the pen they went. About 20 minutes later it was dark so I went back out to put them up. Only they were not on the ground or roosted outside. All of them went in the coop on there on and were perched up for the night!!!! The only differ ant other then the light bulb was I had left the coop door open. The way its designed is I can open the front of the coop to collect eggs and clean but there is a opening there where they can can come in and out whenever...hopefully they go back in again tonight!! thanks

wow that's good to hear, hopefully it wasn't a fluke and they do go back in tonight. It is a pain and I think stressful not only for you but also for the chicks when you have to chase them around to lock them up. ya know. Keep us posted.

OK so were 2 for 2... They all went in the coop last night. however me and my lab had to round them up at dark. I had them out and was hoping to see them return to the coop/pen at dark. They did not! Anyhow at least they went in the coop after wards!

Yep...after i had too round them up. Next trick...get them to learn to go in pen at dark!!!!!!
