Getting new chicks without knowing if male or female

If you are a regular at a particular feed mill, and they're not already selling chicks in the spring, you could ask them about splitting an order, or just taking your extras on consignment.

I'm thinking of doing this at the small feed store I frequent;they mostly cater to the horsey set, and never sell chicks.

If keeping the roosters is not the problem, and you are just worried about them beating each other up etc.... there are other options. I have over 300 chickens, many different breeds, of which many are free range and are roosters. I even have had pens that are all roosters together of different breeds with no problems. The best way to achieve this is to let all the roosters grow up together. They will establish a pecking order and most of the time work it out with out any problems. I have Serama roos running around with Jersey Giants and everything in between and they all get along well..... I introduce new roos on occasion, I just watch them to make sure they don't get too bullied until they find their place in the roo flock.
