getting ready to order chicks- Best hatchery? McMurrays?

Anybody know where Mcmurrays is? I am in Va, I might be better off picking whichever one is closer

I used McMurray and would recommend them to anyone. I got 26 chicks, and all of them lived, (except 1 which died from an accident) they were all very good quality, and the service was exceptional.
I don't like how you have to order 25 but I understand why, and with the great breeds that they sell, it is not hard getting someone to split an order with you

I really like Meyer. I haven't ordered from anywhere else but I have ordered from them twice and they were great. They have really awesome specials if you sign up on their website for emails. I got 26 of my chickens for $1.29 each with free shipping.....it was a brown egg layer assortment and they are all doing great 8 weeks later. I would definitely recommend them for nice birds and great deals.

I got my chicks from Ideal because I was looking for Bantam Ameraucanas and Bantam BLRWs and Ideal had them. Chicks were nice and healthy.

I am in VA. Cackle does not ship to VA. I ordered from Ideal because they had the breeds I wanted in stock. I did have great CS and I have very nice chickens. I don't know if you are aware that VA has strict regulations about poultry coming into the state. I didn't know this until I was going to order chicks. Meyer and Mt. Healthy are both in Ohio.

I'm going to wade in on this topic, not to 'diss' the commercial hatcheries, but I've been very pleased with local breeders. You can generally find them by calling your local 4-H or Cooperative Extension Office. The advantages are: your chicks/pullets are already acclimated to your climate and elevation (I'm at 4600 feet, I worry about bringing a tiny critter from 100 feet above sea level to here) and you can talk to the breeder for literally hours, getting advice and whatnot. Generally, pricing is competitive and many of them produce sex-links or are very good at candling non-sexlinks. Just more to think about!
