I'm going to wade in on this topic, not to 'diss' the commercial hatcheries, but I've been very pleased with local breeders. You can generally find them by calling your local 4-H or Cooperative Extension Office. The advantages are: your chicks/pullets are already acclimated to your climate and elevation (I'm at 4600 feet, I worry about bringing a tiny critter from 100 feet above sea level to here) and you can talk to the breeder for literally hours, getting advice and whatnot. Generally, pricing is competitive and many of them produce sex-links or are very good at candling non-sexlinks. Just more to think about!
