Getting started w quail

Ive decided to switch back to making a quail cube, triangles are too hard lol
8x8 ft cube, wood siding back, + 2 greenhouse panels to let in light but keep out rain to keep the back dry. Heavy duty tarp roof. I should probably make a coop building thread and leave it up for folks to see

I'm doing a ~6" deep wood chip/mulch floor that will be turned as needed and replaced probably every 6-12 months, one corner will be cordoned off for a sand bath area, and another will have a nesting box filled with chopped straw that will be replaced every 1-2 weeks. I've seen folks try all sorts of things, there's no one right answer. Depends on your preferences for cleaning, maintenance, aesthetic, cost, etc.

straw is tough to get my hands on but i can give them yard clippings and such at least. maybe ill try drying out grasses myself?? i think a sand area and a deep litter pine shavings/wood chips is a good idea. my county has free mulch from trees that have been cut down - do you think thats a good base layer? i dont mind putting in a bit of work and i dont care about aesthetics, i just want happy healthy quail that don't cost me a fortune :fl
 
hopefully home depot today! also i found a breeder in my area so im gonna try getting a breedeing quintet from them with the goal of tuxedo. i want to breed for pied quail! i.l probably only do one or two small hatches a year, nothing too much, just enough to keep my population up. I'll have to bring in outside quail occasionally to avoid too much inbreeding obviously. eventually i may invest in an invubator after getting additional hutches set up. i wamt to test how an aviary compares to a traditional quail hutch in terms of bird health, happiness, and productivity.
 
Today I ordered a quail coop kit from Dale’s Quails! The aviary was looking like too much for just starting out, so we’ll upgrade to that later. This seemed like the simplest way forward, it’s a decently spacious coop for 180 USD! Will update when it arrives!
 
Discussions have begun about keeping some indoor button quail as a bedroom companion… in addition to or possibly even instead of coturnix? We’re concerned about keeping them outdoors but they can’t stay in the house, we don’t have space or anywhere with light + ventilation
