Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Here is the storm surge model. We are on the west side island in the central area that the 10N line passes through

We should be ok if the course holds true.We should not get more than a meter rise.

rains and winds will be heavy though

There is an ex pat Vietnamese who has posted pic ....on the social Texas thread...... from Vietnam where the storm hit yesterday his wife is there still

I think the risk is more financial..... Pigs dont have to stink. They are actually very clean animals..... Its the whole waste disposal process that is the issue with regard to stink....

deb

my understanding is pigs will only poop in 1 corner of their pen (down wind)
so if you keep that 1 corner clean you should have little smell

the laborers working on fence will stop for a while and board everything up.

there are 50 eggs in the bator that will have to fend for themselves if we lose power. i would rather bernie run security lights than warm eggs if we lose power.

i will be in constant contact unless cell phone goes down

we have 24 hrs to prepare

Marily was in contact with her mother in the province
all of the fishing boats have been pulled up the beach & are now all lined up on 1 side of the street
my inlaws have a cement block house so not much chance of it blowing away
the roof is another matter

the people who only have a bamboo hut down by the ocean will probably be needing to build another once the storm is finished
such is the life in the Philippines

the storm that just hit vietnam was the "little" category 2 that nuisanced the philippines last weekend. this one is a category 5. it will probably weaken to a 3 or even 2 by the time it hits us. as so few are big enough to effect us below the 10N line, we dont get many

The adventure continues....

After much ruminating over the risks versus benefits, we are adding pigs to the farm.

We will start slowly and see how Bernie's wife copes. I had him put the word out that we wanted 3 little pigs. It took about 3 hours lol. Pigletts of unknown ancestory run 1800 pesos in the market. A local lady has a 220kg monster sow that produced 10 pigletts 5 weeks ago today for 2300p. So......

Fortunately I had not converted the free-standing pig pen into a chicken coop (the triplex are now the isolation coops). Its just a matter of getting them home, giving them 5 days of their current feed then transitioning them to home blended.

Analou is a pig farmer!

Was just chatting with a friend who has pigs and lets her spare roosters free range in the same area.

Seems like the pigs will eat any roosters they can catch.

our last batch of sows, wilma and betty, ate chickens that tried to sneak some of their feed. a pig can move pretty fast!

the new pig area is chicken proof
