Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

So if he is now an addict, does that make you a chick dealer or a chick pusher?

I sell them to anyone who wants them...LOL

Cortunix are a good choice for meat you can eat them at 6 weeks but I find they tend to fill out especally the girls if you give them another few weeks but its up to you. They also lay well so if you always have 4 hens and a roo you will always have eggs to eat, feed back to them for protien and calcuium and to hatch whenever you want more birds. In 10 days you can get at least 30 eggs so you could hatch a new meat supply from your few little birds every 10 days if you wanted to.
I have 2 hens laying currently & have hatched 9 babies in the past 3 weeks & have more cooking. They multiply rather quickly

That's even with eating over half the eggs.

Yes. Its name is Mt Kanlaon. Its active but has not erupted in many years. There are a few volcanos in the North of the island that puff steam and ash every now and then.

We have earthquakes, typhoons (hurricanes) and volcanos. We are protected from tsunamis though. Oh...... and snow is unheard of.
That's it!!! Get my hut built!!! Buyin my ticket now

I could pay you room and board, 100 dollars a month and all the free sunrises and sets you can watch.

Just let me know when to start building your coop.... I mean house.

Seriously though - if anyone is adventurous enough to come and play with chickens and watch a sunrise, I will have a cold San Miguel beer waiting.
Very tempting, but hold the beer. I don't drink

anybody like that squishy feeling between your toes?
Oh yummy!!! About as bad as the spiders I find in mine. Big brown hairy wolf spiders.

If only I was younger! I would JUMP for new adventures! I would love to visit I have only been out of the country to Jamaca and that was an experience as a "vacationer", one I disliked until the last day we had a wonderful local plan our agenda for the day! Nothing like visiting a place and enjoying and seeing everday life, bad and good, amazing and sad. The behind the vacationer walls the market was AMAZING so much creativity and art, lovely fruits and oh their is nothing like a fresh cut pc of sugar cane to suck on! It was a good day that day, we visiited areas that were all just for normal locals and didnt have people begging to braid our hair so we could be a perfect 10!

The scuba/snork pics are awesome!

oh and I will take a coconut instead of a beer any day

What other adventures have you pondered to help feed everyone? What else does Bernie garden?

Chickens......what you do for nest bedding & for floors down there? sand and ?
Shredded coconut husks would work great.

We have geckos here too.. One has been living in the office for two years now (the cats aren't allowed in there so he is supreme overlord of the office!)

I love them anyway.. the evil toads that like to nip toes plus the geckos.
We used to have a "pet" toad that would eat mice. And your fingers if you weren't careful!
That had to be 1 BIG toad!!!

Those cute toads are less than cute if you found them with your toes.

But imagine the TOAD's perspective...there I was sitting in a GREAT spot, catching a lot of bugs and getting pretty full. I must have dozed off a bit because *WHAM* this huge hairy, sharp-ended foot came rushing at me before I could escape! It was h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e!

lol :D

The snow here disappeared literally over night. There are random patches of snow here and there. I just want to run around outside! It's probably still cold as anything though. XD

So cute I love toads and frogs , to bad you coudnt sneak me some tadpoles I loooove tadpoles. Anything is less then nice when you find it with your toes my favorit (not) is cat hair balls and they allways leave them right where your most likely to step and lest likely to see it in time :sick

Yet another fine reason to not own cats. Sorry guys. I can't warm to something my wife is allergic to.

I have a cat and I've only seen him hack up a hairball once ever. He is prolly 9 or ten years old now.

I am allergic to him also.

I probably over did it on the coop.Maybe I should move the chooks out put a for rent shingle on the front. It was meant to be simple with bamboo walls but as its fiesta season, I could not get bamboo - it was all sold to people for making booths to sell at the Sinulog festival. Atleast with the hardwood walls it will last a long long time. I will eventually make its twin facing it, sharing a fence. That will give me room for 120 layers. I have to build bernie and analou a little stuccoed cinder block house first. It will take a year or so to build to that many production birds.

the next few coops will be 4 x 6 row houses for our purebreds if i can do it again. I am hoping I can take 18 eggs of seven different breeds next time. Orpingtons, Cochins, Australorps, Marans, Polish, Aracaunas and Rhode Islands are currently on the top of the list. If I get the same hatch rate there will be about 35 hens and lots of big roasters - and a good start on seeing how the market takes to breeding pairs.
OZ i think those 4x6's are going to prove to be way small they say 2 square foot per bird
so something that small will only allow you about 5 hens & 1 roo in each coop
once you get a big fat broody who can cover a dozen eggs & most if not all hatch out your in trouble
i think 8x8 or better yet 8x12 would serve you better
my buff orpington roo is hitting the mark in good shape so those eggs when the time comes will not be any problem
my HUGE inported english rooster is a wimp even though he is bigger than my buff
the wimp is almost never "jumping" the hens ,the buff is the alpha in the coop
so i'm moving the imported stock to a different building
i hope i start getting some better results
if not Renie has a ton of extra roos so i may have to get a better boy if need be
time will tell

take care
piglett
