Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

5 from 12 hatched all within 7 hrs of the first pip. The remaining 4 will stay in the bator till day 22. its barely day 20 now. Realistically, I dont expect any more to be kicking out. I am happy with that given the fact that they arrived in an egg carton with some paper towel between them. This helps reassure me that 24 eggs is the minimum for shipped eggs I want to carry for each breed for my main flock to build fairly quickly, and 12-18 be the minimum for breeds that I want to play with and see how they fair in the tropics.
Woohooo! ;)

Three days ago, I sat down looking on info on hatching eggs and found this thread. I ended up so enthralled that I read the whole thing! Good luck on your future trip!

I now have hope that a novice like me will be able to successfully hatch someday in the future. :)

Next week I am donating my fertile eggs to a Headstart classroom for a lesson in farms. They asked for 6 eggs to attempt hatching and since I have a mixed bag of chickens that will be mutts, I figure it is a good way to start. I forwarded the link to the hatching 101 thread to the teacher too. So hopefully they have success!

welcome aboard!

Its great that you are helping a school. Knowledge is empowerment.

Now you need to build or buy a simple bator and try it yourself.

I am not a pro at this. I hatch just to learn on any egg I can scrounge or buy inexpensively - in my Anaheim apartment bedroom. I learn from my attempts as well as the hundreds of hours worth of reading on this site.

Seriously - if I can do it - you can!!
