Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

The storms have severly eroded the beach. Here is an example of Bernies hard work. the sand is filling in.

the locals - about three weeks younger

Holy Crap Bernie will have no back left in a few years!! WOW!! How often does he move it forward?

Look how big they are already! Must be the warmth????

also what did you use to band them and did you band males or just breeds? How long do bands stay on?

We just banded the local chicks that the mama abandoned to sit on some eggs laid by her buddies. Just cable ties. We will replace them next week.

I have 9 colors lol. The next batch of eggs will contain breeds that are clearly distinguishable so I may just band all the mutts.

Bernie had help but its not easy work for sure. This is the first time we used bamboo stakes and it seems to be holding. We may add another row a further 15 feet closer to the water if this holds. That way we may be able to add a decent reserve before next december. Its amazing how much the beach grows and then gets eaten away each season.

The chickens - cant call them chicks any more I guess are huge alright. I was shocked myself. We should start getting eggs in 3 months

. Phase one of getting the flock out of here appears to be a success.

So I have these cochins taking their sweet time to hatch.

Seven eggs were all chirping with three externally pipped for hours. I was starting to get concerned that those that did not pip yet would have enough air left to breath.

Things are moving now. Once has hatched.

I am hatching these with an 11 and 12 year old. Thank God they have the 3 buff orp chicks to fuss over.

I want then hatched and dry so I can get them out of here tomorrow.
