Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

"Did you say we could've hatched in a tropical paradise!!??" Lol.

Can you get diatomaceous earth there? Food grade DE is safe for the chickens because it works mechanically (no toxins) to weaken the exoskeleton of insects, and they dry out and die. Had ants trailing around and through the coop last summer after the water. They were soon gone after I sprinkled a perimeter of DE around the coop.

So sorry about the troubles with the second round of eggs. Since practically everything that could go wrong did this time, next round can only be better. You are obviously not the type to give up just because something is hard. (Thinking of your beautiful children here!

thanks for the word. next time around it can only be better.

in retrospect, my first hatch in the Philippines, and all the hatches I have performed in the USA have been successful because I get the art and science of hatching. I exptected too much of others who were basically given a pile of eggs and told to go forth and hatch - like many people on this website will less of an understanding of the science no the art - and fail miserably. sure we had bad luck, but most luck is not really luck at all. I have learnt so much from this - not just for myself but how to teach Bernie. Bernie is amazing with the chicks, we just have to get him amazing with making chicks.

now DE

every DE user should read this:

http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/de.htm

now for the good news.

A month ago we sent an email to the Secretary for Social Welfare. It ignited a fire within the DSWD and today Mrs Oz was in Cavite - the region where we got our kids - having a case conference. There were lots of high level Social Welfare people there and clear timelines were set forth for their minions to complete their tasks. The requirements should be completed and in the courts for final decision by October and the courts will finalize the adoptions - with a bit of luck - by Christmas.

You know OZ I have been an on again off again proponent of DE. I figured why not its food grade if anything it will have a benign effect. I used to use DE in a filter for cleaning aquarium water in the Aquarium store I worked in....

But this article made me figure out the reason I was off again over DE. Its that whole inhalation deal. We humans can "hold our breath" wear masks Protect ourselves.... Heck I wont even use talc at home of any kind because of my own issues with asthma.... But the livestock dont know dont care and their faces are right down into it.

Thank you....

my thoughts are the same

If i need to wear a NIOSH mask to handle the stuff, why let my chickens dust bathe in it. Lots of people swear by it though. In the Philippines, food grade DE is 120P /kg or $1.20 per pound
