Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Construction bamboo, get's me every time!

I know it's a very fast growing, strong and a cheap Chinese export, but that term makes me think of the crazy high rise bamboo scaffolding pictures we see in safety movies. Wouldn't dream of that here.

Solid readily available material though.
we are trying to keep a similar look to the front of our house but because the water table is just below the surface, we are trying to make the fences more durable.

the cost of bamboo has risen 500% due to international demand. even at a direct from the ground source

Costs a packet here too mate, I looked at some as roosts, nearly cheaper to buy Jarrah! I like the look of it, from memory it's the fastest land growing plant, and it only gets pipped by Kelp.

I am sure it will look the biz mate, but I wouldn't feel to comfortable hanging off a 15 story building by nothing but the stuff hahaha.

just using a bamboo bridge is enough to scare the crap out of me = let alone 200ft of scaffolding

its pretty. we used 2000 pieces on our original fence

so what does it cost for construction in the Philippines

The following is the bulk of the materials for a 400ft fence. The fence will have 8x8 concrete posts every 10ft. there will be a 2ft high cinder block wall with a 4ft high paling fence on top of the cinder blocks. the palings will be construction bamboo. the rails will be local coconut lumber.

how long will the rails last?
where my inlaws are you can get all the rocks & gravel you want for free
you just have to pay a couple local guys p300 a day each to go pick it up down by the ocean
you will however have to feed them some fish & rice at lunch time
have you ever priced out a rock fence OZ?
i know the masons there get the huge sum of about $10 a day
it's the cement that adds up fast if you are doing a big project

The rails will be good for 10 years at least. I will use 3/8th stainless threaded rod to attach them to the posts. It will add $200 to the price.

This is more of a question of aesthetics.

I could go with cinder block very cheaply really but we are after a certain look - the silhouette of the bamboo at sunrise and sunset.

We have a little government agency called the DNR - it does not look kindly on people pulling their own rocks and gravel. Its regulated.

At home depot gravel is $27 for 9 cu ft. I am getting 216 cu ft for $86.
Cement is $7.76 a bag in LA versus $5.45

Our laborers to help Bernie will get paid the prevailing day wage for an agricultural worker - about $7 per day plus travel ($1.50) from the local city plus lunch.

It don't look like a good fence building day from here, but what do I know?

its the Monsoon season now. We will have rain almost every day for 4 months. At least 4 feet of the stuff. In July we get half an inch of rain every day. You learn to work around it,

The fence building will start in July. I will get a worker that I trust from my father in law. The sugar cane season grinds to a halt in June until harvest in September. Benamin is a skilled carpenter and helped build our pig pens and garage.
