Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Our broodie hatched 8 of 12 so far.

I have spent the evening packing eggs. 72 to a box with foam inserts.

I had 72 Australorps coming. Between molt and heat, I may end up with 6. Maybe I can teach black merkan orpingtons to say g'day

Of course you can!! Just after the Roo lays an egg on the roof peak and we bet on the egg doing a north or south roll!
To add I hope that you have a very good trip and an better hatch this time!

Quick question (sorry, full of those!).

We decided to go with sand for our chickens' coop. So we went out and bought sand...play sand...and it's dampened.

Then I came online and read that you're supposed to use river sand, and it should be dry.

Whoops!

I did read that the play sand is fine, but couldn't find anybody else talking about how the sand was damp when they bought it. Think it'll be fine?

I am not an expert on the nuances of sand but I would say its fine. It will dry out.

Damp is fine thats part of the reason sand is sooo good because it dries out very quickly. The reason for the different sizes is its cheaper and doesnt compact as easily. When you are ready to add some more Just get some river sand and top dress it and stir it in a little.

It depends on how you buy your sand, if it's per pound you want it as dry as you can get it! If it's by the container (bag, box or,truck load) how wet does not matter! Sand will drain and dry in a hurry without rain messing it up!

Thanks guys!!! Now, is there a specific reason to have sand in the run? Our run is grassy. Other than having to pull out all of the pokey plants (thistleweed), it hasn't seemed like a problem. Something I should know about, though?

The flock spent their first night in the coop last night, not contained in the brood box. They were a bit confused, lol. But they seem to like it. Today, DH is going to install the door, so I don't have to carry birds out of the coop and drop them over the run fence. Been doing that for far too long and it's getting old. Especially now that the roos are getting peckish.
