Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I should get one to try

from what I read they're pretty easy birds.

Now y'all got me curious about some muscovy's.... Hm

So.. no quack? So they're quiet? Or do they honk or something..

they hiss and make a chruble churble nose. But No because they arent from the same family tree as ducks... or if they were it was a very very long time ago. They originated in Mexico and parts of the US. Because of this if you cross them with say a Peking duck the offspring will be sterile. and called a Mule duck. In France they use Mules for FoiGras production.

I just looked up recipes for them and I am going to give Duck Procheuto a try. they are also very big One fellow on youtube was talking about one duck making four meals. they are leaner than regular ducks but they still have alot of fat on them. If I can obtain one already butchered I would like to taste the meat.... I love duck anyway... but Muscovys are a very very dark meat.

I checked craigslist.. One farm nearby raises heritage birds. They're all pretty looking and stuff. Another person nearby has muscovy ducklings for $6 a piece.

I'm thinking no. 1 might be offended if I ask for an adult I can butcher

No.2 would take a while to raise. Ofcourse, I've got a broody who just hatched chicks today, do you think she would notice a duckling?

Just about everybody has trouble getting rid of roosters. A breeder may be happy for you to take some drakes.

They do not quack. They sort of grunt. A bit like other ducks without the quack.

They have less oil in their feathers than a mallard type duck. They don't really need a pond.

They graze more than eat bugs like mallards. Our Muscovy pen is void of grass but the pekins almost need a weed whacker in their pen.

They do poop like a duck though.

To me the meat is more like veal than adult beef. Its lower fat than mallard. I added pork fat to make sausage. It was very good. You need to refrigerate and let set before trying to debone to grind up.

I am building my scovies up as broodies for my pekins.
