Hi, I just got this beautiful bird from somebody who thought she was a hen. Then she started crowing, and now I'm not sure. I have another giant cochin that looks very similar. What do you think? And if you're in Portland, OR, I may need to rehome him (or her).

Hi there. :frow

Did they really?! Or just take advantage of you not knowing? How much did "she" cost you? Post a pic of your other one, being sure to show saddle feathers and state age if you need opinions on it...

He is pretty... but if he crowed right away at his new location... he was very likely also crowing at his old location... at least in my experience, it usually takes a little while to settle in and have completely normal behavior.

Are you able to keep him if your other is a female? If not consider posting him on your local craigslist farm and garden section... or maybe in your local feed store posting board, or if you Facebook there might be some local poultry enthusiast there.

:fl

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I think I was taken for a ride. I don't have much experience with roosters, especially giant cochin roosters. I am looking into ways to rehome him or return him to his farm. Too bad - he is a gorgeous bird and quite friendly for a rooster! At least he has managed to reinforce our male ducks' fear of chickens.

... And I just heard from the farmer who sold him to me - he is glad to exchange him for a hen. Everyone's happy :)

If you can keep a roo I can say that the bigger breeds are quite kind and friendly. And he's so pretty :)
I know, he is super sweet. I wish I could keep him, but roosters aren't allowed in the city. He's been sleeping in the garage so he doesn't wake up the neighborhood!
