Girls laying under roost!

I have a little leghorn that just started laying. At first it was just drop your egg where you are standing, but she worked her way to the corner of the coop. So, I added a nice comfortable nesting box in that corner. They sleep on top of it, not on their roost...and the eggs are back to the middle of the floor! This batch is just unpredictable:)

If the fakes eggs aren't cutting it, you can try moving a few of their own, real eggs into the nest box for extra encouragement. That worked for me last week when two of my girls (who are old enough to know better!) randomly decided to build a new nest right under the roost bar (yes, in the poop :( ). Just mark (with a pencil or something) the eggs you are using as decoys so you can tell what is new and what is old.

Are you sure they are not laying while on the roost?
How long have they been laying?
Hello Aart. Well, I can't be entirely sure they aren't, as they have generally laid one or two eggs first thing before I've even let them out. The other eggs are laid later in the day so either those are being laid directly in the poo or they're going inside, hopping onto the roost and laying their eggs like that deliberately to p**s me off. I wouldn't put it past them, crafty little b***ers! I'm just hoping that eventually they'll take the fake egg hint!

Hi! Yes, I did try that but it didn't work, hence I went out and bought the fake eggs. Argh!!!!

Forgot to add - they're quite young and have been laying for about two months.

Hmm, interesting ... so if I were to put a nest box under the roost, presumably it would need a lid so the poo couldn't land in it?
I use cat litter nesting boxes with the big flap cut off. Great for moving around. Also if I have a broody hen I want to break I put the large flap back on and move her to the isolation cage. Mine just ignore it and lay next to it still under the roosting area.

Hmm, it sounds as if chickens are the most stubborn creatures! I kind of like that about them :D
