Giving chicks away after hatching

Is it really a large amount of work keeping chickens? I would think keeping them from predators is the biggest deal. I am trying to figure out how much to spend on a coop. If most people give up on chickens after a season or two, then obviously I'd want to spend less.

If you've had emus and ducks, I can't imagine the chickens being any more work than that.

Kinda sad if people really give up on chickens after a year or two. I started small because I wasn't sure I'd like it, but even if I hadn't, we still would've kept the chickens we started with (just wouldn't have added more).
