GLuten free feed??????

I can not most of the cross reactive foods. There are antibody tests that are available for these foods. I react to gluten free corn, gf rice, gf potatoes, etc. Myself and MANY others with celiac have these issues... Oh and eggs cause a reaction for me too. My doctor warns against the cross reactive foods as well. And I have never been told or read that cross reactive foods are just contaminated. In my celiac group's there are many people who struggle with these foods. And milk is a major issue for many with celiac disease.

The study is done by the science advisor for the lab that does the cross reactivity testing.

I agree that the study having only 13 people in it makes it poor evidence for cross reactivity as well as the gluten contamination of the corn.

I think that this discussion doens't beling in a chicken forum.

I found out the gluten in feed was a problem over two seasons when eggs that we had been eating all summer started bothering us as winter came on and the free range hens starting eating more feed. I finally started freezing them for the winter months.

I think that raising my own would be the best. The free range eggs that I can find here are supplemented with some grains. Thanks you for another confirmation that this could work. I still haven't gotten birds yet. I am leaning towards quail as I can't have very many chickens where I live. I am thinking that I should still try those omega 6 eggs before committing, but I haven't felt like making myself sick yet.

I totally understand. I get sick for a week to 10 days from cross reactives and up to 3 months for a serious glutening. I wanted to point out the many issues I have with a broad range of foods. I found this thread looking for GF feed as well. I plan to keep a house chicken so the wheat is an major CC issue. If you make a feed that doesn't have oats, and you continue to react you may have to look at eggs as the issue and not what the hens are eating. I think feeding GF feed to avoid CC is probably a good idea no matter what!

I eat eggs every day. I don't react to them. I do not have problems with "cross reactivity" with eggs. The hens are fed a feed that is free of gluten grains and oats. I have only had problems when the hens are fed gluten grains and oats which is what happens in the winter here. Now I freeze eggs in the summer to eat in the winter. I thought I explained most of this in the post that you quoted.
 
Corn is GMO and has gluten in many cases. Good you have a local corn that may not be cross contaminated. I don't do corn, soy, dairy, gluten. I have been trying to determine what I could feed my girls to remove the GMO as I tolerate the eggs when they eat corn, but I don't want to keep exposing myself to RoundUp and even gluten. I don't know if the metabolism of chickens converts the gluten enough for most people. I can't even find non-GMO seeds right now. I was going to grow my own corn this year.
My hens get plenty of veggies from the garden and all the leaves and pieces pulled off from cooking. But they can't totally free range as there are too many hawks and too little cover. I throw compost in the HUGE penned area to encourage bug growth for them. Also bales of straw for the same reason. I wonder how much uncooked rice they could tolerate? It would sure be easier to store and feed with it.
Chickens can have crab shells and shrimp shells, and left over meat. They love bone marrow and especially cracked chicken bones as they can get to it easier. (I don't tell them they're eating chicken bones--and they don't seem to care much anyway) They eat leftover stews. They aren't wild about some of the stuff, but then it becomes worm food, and the chickens DO love the worms.
I use various seeds and have been looking for a reasonably priced source of rice or lentils or peas. I also make suet for them with peanut butter or such, with table scraps and nuts. This sounds like I do much more than I do. I am only cooking for 1-2, so I can't do a huge flock. When I weed the garden or yard I throw all the weeds in the HUGE penned area.

I'd love to know if anyone finds a source or premixed GMO free gluten free feed.
 
Hello all! I am a new chick mama and we are looking to feed our babies gluten free food. My babies are 7 weeks old. I have a friend who has hens who are already laying. She is moving and I will be keeping her 11 girls. How long do you think it will take to get the gluten out of their bodies so it doesn't affect the eggs? Thank you!
