Gnats/Blood spots on comb

Has anyone else had gnats on their rooster's combs? They'll come and suck blood until they can hardly fly away, and leave blood spots on his comb that are probably 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch big. Then the hens come and peck it. They do it to the hens a very little bit, but not nearly as much as they do to Franklin. Is this normal, or is it there something wrong with him?
