Goatsitting, now owner refuses to get her goats, ignoring me

Rather than the police, you should look to the sheriff. There's likely to be better experience with this sort of thing. Do you have a Thrifty Nickel or Trading Post type of classifieds-only newspaper? That's generally okay. It may be that you have evidence that she knows she's supposed to pick them up, but often the law still says that it's supposed to be run in the paper and whatnot. You ought to be able to get that out of the sheriff.

We live in a tiny town in Maine; I'd e-mailed the police this morning and a cop came by this afternoon to talk about it. He was very nice, said he's going to call her and tell her to make arrangements. I've also found an on-line classifieds site to put the notice on, so at least there's that, too.

That is going to be an awkward time at pick up

So after all this did you decide you don't personally want goats? Or are you attached to them? If she really cares at all about them, and doesn't have a place, she ought to give them to you and put it in writing!

I do want goats, but I want dairy goats, not fiber goats, and I only want two of them. We really don't have room for more than that. A friend of mine has offered to give me his one, lonely dairy goat, so I'd like to get that goat and a companion for it, and I don't want to split up this group of goats, or at least beyond their self-appointed BFF pairs, if possible.

I wanted to address the post upthread about offering $100 for all 4 of them. We were going to do that, except when I asked about her selling them she told me she wanted $300 each. Kid goats of the same breed in this area are on Craigslist for half that. I told her our goat budget was about $100 and that we couldn't keep them all, and then got the silent treatment again, so I dropped it.

This person is surely trying to pull a fast one ! So if you want to keep the goats as your own then do so , or sell them as if they are your own, as in law , they are ! Dont be bullied buy this person ! Even if she trys to reclaim them dont let them off your property ! Her only recourse would be to reimburse you the full livery charge for the full duration . And that is not going to happen . So enjoy YOUR goats , or sell them as you wish ! Good Luck > x
