Goatsitting, now owner refuses to get her goats, ignoring me

I do have a call into animal control, not because I want them to do anything but because I want this to be as legal and official as possible if I take permanent possession of the goats. Apparently this town's animal control is named Martin, and the nice officer that came by the house said he was having trouble with his cell phone, which is why I got voicemail, but the officer is going to fill Martin on the situation.

Seriously, I love this town. This little situation is probably the most drama the police have had in a month.

i'd hand them over to animal control/a rescue/rehome them yourself
god knows what she'll do with them if she gets them back...if she doesnt have the means to care for them/want them and hasnt wanted anything to do with them in all this time..who knows where they'd end up

at least a rescue could find a proper well fitting adequate home for them.

im hoping she doesnt come and get them, and that you or a rescue find them a nice home

I am not a lawyer. I am a paralegal and my business law books are packed away. Maybe one of the lawyers on the site can advise you. By caring for the animals you have what is called a bailment. You can charge the owner for your expenses. You can also dispose of the property after a reasonable period especially after notifying the owner. Notice the sign at the dry cleaners about unclaimed property after 30 days or whatever.

The goat that died in all probability died of entero. That is why it is so important that goats be vaccinated for clostridium perfingens, and that goatkeepers have clostridium perfingens antitoxin on hand at all times. Entero strikes without warning and kills very quickly. Without the antitoxin, there is not much you can do for the animal.

No news, and no communication, although I do know she opened the e-mail I sent alerting her of the impending forfeiture. She has until Friday to get the goats, then they're being sold. I'm still shocked I'm actually going to have to sell these goats. I'll update Friday, maybe she actually will come get them. But at this point, I doubt it.
