Went out for this evenings feeding and found one of my RIR hens as pictured below. She is/was the most submissive of the hens and the one the 2 roosters always jumped on the most grabbing her comb which has been long non existent. I am not sure if the roosters initially started the wound or what but i have caught a couple other hens pecking at her there this evening. I dont think there is anything i can do for her, its very deep and i have no way to separate her out.
Now to the next question, is there anyway to prevent this from happening again to another hen or is it a such as life deal? Thanks

ouch! Is there anyway you could make a saddle for her? I've had a couple over time that looked about that bad and I seperated them. Do you think it's too deep to put some pine tar on? Some times that will keep them from pecking at it anymore. I

Poor Baby! I don't blame you for wanting to put her out of her misery. What is your rooster to hen ratio? Are all of your chickens RIRs?

The poor girl just looks off, outside of the wound I mean. She looks a tad thin and her feathers are dull. I bet she has been very stressed being picked on by the Roo's and it wouldn't surprise me if the other hens were picking at her too. It's nothing you've done, I bet they are hassling her about eating and stuff too. It's common.
I had a pullet with a very similar personality and she ended up being culled after getting a serious injury that the others wouldn't let heal. We would get her almost completely healed up and they would just pick her apart again.

2 roosters 14 hens. The roosters are BC marans and two of the hens are as well. The rest are RIR hens.

Trimming the toe tails exactly how far? As in with dogs, you go to far and your into the quick.

No pine tar handy. Its through several layers of flesh, the picture doesnt show how deep it is.

Is there anything dietary the birds might be lacking that they would want to pick on her? I have free choice 16% layer crumble, oyster shell, and grit. I also give about a quart can of black oil sunflower seeds daily to them (16 total)
