Gold Laced Orpington- For Learning and Sharing

Pics
Wow those are really pretty. I just have one regular buff orpington. Who has finally started laying me some eggs! Hooray

Ask and ye shall receive... shafting is when the web/quill/shaft is lighter in color than the background color and makes a visible line. What is disappointing is that this pullet has green sheen throughout. Hard to tell in the picture since I blocked some of the sun so that you could see the shaft better. So just having green sheen isn't going to totally correct shafting.

I often will see shafting in Blue Orps. Some to lesser degrees.

You have me looking at all of them now for that..I dont know..this bantam maybe doesnt have it? I was straining to see any here

The cock birds usually don't shaft as much. The problem is the hen/pullet.

Another interesting/frustrating observation that I've made is that their lacing continues to improve as they change out their plumage, but if the shafting is there in the begging...it will always be there

I'm keeping my eye on one tiny little chicken nugget in my brooder. So far, not shafting. I bet it's a boy. If it's a girl, I may never let it free range until I get her eggs hatched.

Here's a little group shot of my first test hatches. A bit blurry. Sorry. The oldest one is 5 weeks the youngest two are 2 wks. The lacing is coming in immediately which is fun. Last time, I had to wait on some of them. I think only one is a definite pullet. There are two that might be. Odds are not in my favor -3 out of 8. I guess if I get three I will happy at this point. It's amazing how different their down color can be. My two cinnamon ones look like they may not be shafted. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The top 2 on the left look like girls to me.If the 3rd one on the left top is the same age as the one on top right, that's a girl too judging by ther wing feathers. Boy, has the lacing improved !

Am looking to expand my flock and getting a few orpington chicks (hens) for egg laying. Has anyone had any experience in adding this breed to other breeds? I have 5 white plymouth and 5 red sex link that I got as chicks last May. Any suggestions or advice would be welcome.
