Gold Laced Orpington- For Learning and Sharing

Pics
Here's a little group shot of my first test hatches. A bit blurry. Sorry. The oldest one is 5 weeks the youngest two are 2 wks. The lacing is coming in immediately which is fun. Last time, I had to wait on some of them. I think only one is a definite pullet. There are two that might be. Odds are not in my favor -3 out of 8. I guess if I get three I will happy at this point. It's amazing how different their down color can be. My two cinnamon ones look like they may not be shafted. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

AH! How cute!

Nice job!

The top 2 on the left look like girls to me.If the 3rd one on the left top is the same age as the one on top right, that's a girl too judging by ther wing feathers. Boy, has the lacing improved !

Yes!! May the Orpington Gods hear your prediction! The two on the top left are Chip and Kay. The third is Cathy, Those are the three that I was guessing were girls, but I never have had much luck guessing. I picked them out as girls by the way the behaved.

The lacing is so much more improved this generation. I'll try to take better pictures of Kay and find pictures of the breeding pullets when they were this age. Some might find it interesting to see the comparison.

I see improvement with the shafting with Kay. But, I do not see any shafting on Chip. It might be that I'm wishing it away.

Am looking to expand my flock and getting a few orpington chicks (hens) for egg laying. Has anyone had any experience in adding this breed to other breeds? I have 5 white plymouth and 5 red sex link that I got as chicks last May. Any suggestions or advice would be welcome.

I'm not sure. Someone will answer your question. I just have Gold Laced. I have two borrowed Wyandottes, but they are not integrated with the other girls. Sorry.

Here are some GL in Germany I think its Germany.. ..youtube not coming through well today ..what little I saw of this looked good.

here is another link in case the one above doesnt work

I think these are Jonas' birds. He's in one of my forums.

Beautiful birds everyone!

Figured I'd try to help while I'm here too...

Is it possible to make a Laced Lavender Orpington? I know nothing of genetics, so figured i would ask !

I'm not sure. Sorry. All my research has been dedicated to the Gold Laced Black. I wonder if the lavender is similar to blue genetically?

A Lavender Laced Gold Orpington would be possible, but it would take several generations to perfect. Crossing a GL Orp over Lav hens would be the start to the project, you'd produce visibly Black chicks with varying degrees of gold leakage and possible incomplete lacing, all whom would be carrying the Lav gene recessively.

From there breed the F1 offspring together, this hopefully will produce some chicks that are (1) visibly Lavender and (2) more completely laced.

Here's where it gets kinda hinky- the Lav gene will dilute/modify Black in the bird, paling it to the silvery gray color we refer to as Lavender. However it will also dilute/modify the gold color throughout the birds plumage making it a much paler blonde-creamy gold. Lemme see if I can find a picture to reference...

Once you have something similar to the above color established you can outcross again to "regular" Gold Laced Orps to further improve lacing, type, etc. Crossing a Gold Laced Orp with the hypothesized Lavender Laced Gold Orp will produce all visibly Gold Laced Orps recessively carrying the Lav gene, breeding these offspring together will produce a percentage of Lav Laced Gold Orp offspring.

Lavender is a recessive gene so it takes 1 "copy" of the gene from each parent bird for it to be visibly present.

***ETA: I strongly suggest against using "American"/APA style Lavender Orpingtons for this project as most (if not all) of these birds lack good Orpington type IMO. You would only be taking multiple steps back by using birds of lower quality/type, you still want your Lavender Laced Golds to look like Orpingtons, right? The Imported English Lavenders are becoming more and more prevalent and would be the birds I would use if I were attempting this project.

I know that ya'll were discussing the "Green Sheen" genetics.....If you'll look towards the back of Sir Charles body...next to his tail...Green.
After he moulted....this showed up.
