Deek.....what pretty babies.....Kay is so pretty with that lacing! I vote for the name of "Sweet Pea" for the second one...that is what came to mind when I looked at her! She is so sweet looking!

Gonna have my first ones in a few weeks!!!!! Can't wait!

Sorry, I may have confused the issue by not clarifying a little better. I was asking about orpington colors but from a pigment perspective. I have some whites, blacks and blues and i am trying to better understand the gold vs silver base discussion as I have seen it in a number of places but am trying to figure out what exactly it means to me when i am making selections for the breeding pens. Thanks very much for the explanation

Thanks, Vicki. Any word on when you'll get yours?
No..I will start pressuring the DH at the end of April. I have to be really really good till than...Maybe do some extra cooking and cleaning..maybe a surprise massage appointment for him...I have about 50 chicks right now. I will have 50 more by Easter. That should keep me out of trouble till than.

I have to build an enclosed run yet. I will also be keeping my show Silkies in the same building. I should say potential show silkies. I have just Silkie baby's and eggs in the incubator. I have never had bantams before. My DH wants them and he said he is going to show them.

They look like cute toys to me. I asked him if he is going to eat the culls..I probably should not have asked him that.

There's a pullet in my brooder!!! She's been my favorite since day one...and she's a girl! Totally psyched.

Here's Kay at 5 weeks.

This is the other chick that I am madly in love with since day one. No name for now. She acts like a girl, but I'm not holding my breath.
The two chicks in the back look like pullets to me..

They are soo pretty... I am going to make a floating wall with a door to create a new room for Danny and the black hens he is going to court this yr :) I will have brad make housing for them so I can lock them up inside for night time and to lay their eggs :) Until I can get another coop built.

Renie, you said this was going to be an exciting year..it sure is...Danny was my favorite Dee rooster..Cant wait to see his babies..you have some amazing black orps to work with..going to be fun to see how they develope. keep us in some update pics.

Dee that sure does look like a pullet..

Question number 4 Would I also be correct that the silver carrier bird is the better option to use for outcross to white to avoid the red leakage in the male hackles? Question number 5?Not sure if this is a question Ive been told that the cuckoo base is the way to avoid that, in the event that you have red leakage, but im not sure how the cuckoo gene works.

From what I understand, the ones carrying "gold" are in fact carrying red. And if they don't carry red, then they are considered to be carrying silver. So for your solid blacks, the red is desirable, but not for any of the blues or splashes. I am assuming your blacks are the result of breeding blues, where you have a percentage that will be black. I'd cull all the ones with red leakage, for that signals what we think of as the "gold" - which is an enhancement for black but they in fact carry red. Can it be any more confusing? I hope not.

So this "gold" or red is desirable in gold laced but something you don't want in blues and splash.
