Fuzzy butts!!!

When I am allowed to I am going to get a group shot. BF said I couldn't take them from under the heat lamp for too long.

We have four chicks from 12 eggs... another one hatched but it had its insides on its outsides.

I think you will find, at least I have, that the Eng babies don't need or like too much heat. I like to keep them in a place that is large enough for them to get away from the heat if they choose to do so. I have found that they only want the heat for a few minutes. Especially if they have each other to keep warm. Once mine are 2 weeks old, they rarely go to the heat. They prefer each other to keep warm.

The chick in the picture above is perfect. 100% what one would expect a GL chick to look like. In the next few days the primaries will start poking out. Post pictures then so that others can see how the lacing develops.

I'm sorry one did not develop properly.

I had researched how best to cull them humanely if this ever happened. I wanted to be prepared. I had purchased BBS orps from someone on BYC to practice my incubating/hatching. I have a friend that wanted them. One hatched with a cross beak. It wasn't getting enough nourishment although it was always trying to eat. It never really had a full crop and peeped, out of hunger I guess, so I had to cull it. First chicks ever and I had to cull one. Good lesson though. I am sorry for your loss.

That is a great tip. This is our first time with Eng Orp babies of any kind. Our BBS, we bought as adults and will be getting our first babies this weekend. Currently there are 7 Silkies in with them and I have noticed that the Silkies definitely need the heat lamp more. This weekend they will be separated.

This is definitely going to be a photo project of every step along the way! Ours all have the cinnamon/brown fuzz on their head and a much darker color everywhere else.

It's always upsetting when one has to be culled.
