Golden campines.

I posted this on the Campine a thread but thought I might try u guys too:)

Well after looking at my newly hatched campine chicks I was wondering... Is there a way to tell the sex of a day or two old campine chicks? Maybe patterns? I saw something on feathersite but wasn't really any help. I looked at the little undeveloped combs and they looked to all be slanted... Think I have all girls? Their moms have floppy single combs
Thanks

Hi, I was wondering any of you had campines long enough to tell me about their laying capabilities? Also I read they rarely go broody, is that true?

I have had my girl for 2 years. She lays about 5-6 medium sized white eggs a week. She is a great flyer and loves to follow me around and chatter, but she is not one to be picked up and cuddled. In fact, good luck catching her! She was the only one to somehow survive a middle of the night bear attack that wiped out my entire flock of adult chickens including my rooster. I came home to find her pecking around outside the coop, the wall hanging off of the coop and all of her friends reduced to puffs of feathers. She was acting as if nothing happened. If you have a lot of predators, I highly recommend this breed - plus she is just a beautiful bird.

ETA: She has never gone broody.

3 of my 5 Campines survived. Two are cockerels, one a pullet. I decided that my breeding roosters would get named after boxers, therefore it's fitting that the better of the two males and the beginning of my breeding program will be named Ali! He's pretty and makes a ton of noise. Lol

What does double mating mean? I saw it on your website. Thanks for posting this.

This refers to setting up 2 breeding lines. One that produces good males, one that produces good females. Some breeders feel this is necessary, some don't. Also varies with breed. Some seem to respond best to double matings. I single mated Campines with good results.
