Golden Comet hen or roo?

Hi everyone I'm new to backyard chickens as a member. Moved to Florida from new jersey and missed my chickens from NJ so much I decided to get a few even though I live in a place I'm not supposed to have them. We all know how much we can't live without our chickens though lol ;-) They are four months old now and I'm slightly worried I have one roo. Can anyone give some input? Thanks!

Hello and Welcome To BYC! X2 on try posting in the What Breed/Gender forum, Golden Comets are red sex links and the girls are reddish with some white in the tail and hackles, the boys are mostly white, so unless you were given the wrong chicks, you should have girls, Mt Healthy has a picture of a hen & roo. http://www.mthealthy.com/store/948458/product/GC-P At four months old they would be getting ready to lay if they have not already and the girls's combs/wattles will turn red.

Welcome to the site, though I'd be careful if you aren't legally allowed to have them (I'm assuming when you say you aren't supposed to have them, you mean you legally aren't allowed.) If someone complains you'll be at a disadvantage. If you want to work on getting the local laws changed regarding chicken keeping, I'd check here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/3/Laws - there *should* be something in there regarding changing local laws/ordinances. Any other more experienced BYC members should be able to help too.

As for whether your chicken is a hen or rooster, I've not got the experience to answer that.

Golden Comet is a fancy name for Red Sex Link - if what you have is a first generation (ie from the hatchery) RSL, then that is not a rooster

I have a male golden comet. He is seventeen weeks old and I already know that he is a rooster. He is pure White, he has a big floppy comb, and he always cocks his head when he looks at something. If your chicken does not have the comb, or the color, or the cocking of the head, that means that your bird is probably a hen.

Actually, red sex links (which golden comets are) are pretty much exactly that color/pattern for pullets - cockerels are completely differently patterned and colored, which is the beauty of sex links. A cockerel/roo would not be even remotely colored like the bird pictured.
